ROME — When Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line in Rome on Sunday, it didn’t look like the end of a long struggle so much as the confirmation of a promise.

The Danish cyclist, riding for Team Visma-Lease a Bike, won the Giro d’Italia and capped the three-week race with an overall advantage of 5 minutes, 22 seconds over second-place Felix Gall. Jai Hindley finished third, 6:25 behind.

With the win, Vingegaard became the eighth male rider to win all three Grand Tours. He had already won the Tour de France in 2022 and ’23, then claimed his first Spanish Vuelta title last year. This Giro marked his first time winning the race.

After crossing the finish line, the 29-year-old Vingegaard embraced his wife and two children. All three of them were wearing replicas of his maglia rosa — the leader’s pink jersey — turning the moment into something personal as well as historic.

Vingegaard entered the Giro as the pre-race favorite, and he treated the first Grand Tour victory of his career like it was expected. He dominated his first Giro and now turns his attention to the Tour de France, where he will attempt to become the ninth man to complete the Giro-Tour double.

The final stage, largely processional, ended with eight laps through Rome. It was on a day that felt more like celebration than battle. Riders were seen sharing a box of sweets at the start of the stage and were also given glasses of Prosecco. During the ride out to the sea, they posed for team photos, with tension briefly replaced by routine camaraderie.

Still, a win was a win. Jonathan Milan, the sprint specialist, took the stage victory in a bunch sprint. He edged out compatriot Giovanni Lonardi and French cyclist Paul Penhoët.

Earlier in the race, Milan had watched other bids for stage wins end in disappointment. Sunday’s victory gave him a moment he’d been waiting for — even as Vingegaard’s achievement took center stage. The route for the final day started in Rome. went out to the sea. then returned for the finishing circuit in the Italian capital.

  1. Wait, Giro is like the same as Tour de France right? Either way congrats I guess. I saw 5 minutes 22 seconds and thought that was a crash time or something.

  2. The part about his wife and kids wearing the pink jersey replicas is kinda sweet but also the article kept calling it maglia rosa like everyone already knows. Also eight laps through Rome??? That sounds like a lot but I feel like they said processional so how hard was it really.

  3. Prosecco + sweets + elite cycling and somehow it’s still “historic” lol. I don’t get how 5:22 over Felix Gall = win all three tours, like math don’t sound right. Next thing you know he’s gonna “dominate” again at Tour and then everyone forgets about Jai Hindley.
