Greg Kwedar says Charles Melton leads with generosity

In an interview ahead of IndieWire Honors Spring 2026, Oscar-nominated director Greg Kwedar remembers meeting “Beef” star Charles Melton in Los Angeles and traces the kind of generosity he brings to every role—on set and on screen. Melton is now recognized as
On a rooftop at the London Hotel in Los Angeles. Greg Kwedar met Charles Melton in the fall of 2024—fresh off a plane. and only minutes before a screening downstairs of their film. “Sing Sing.” The timing felt like the start of something: Melton had just landed in town. Kwedar was already walking toward his next project. “Saturn Return. ” and they were talking about the possibility of working together.
Kwedar had a clear reason to pay close attention. On that morning’s flight. he rewatched Melton’s interview for “CBS Sunday Morning. ” where Melton was promoting “May December.” Kwedar said Melton’s performance in “May December” had stayed with him—so much so that it made the rest of the film “fall away” while he watched. transfixed. as Melton grappled with a “sea of feeling” from inside his character.
The interview, Kwedar recalled, carried a family thread that stuck. Melton’s father spoke about serving in the Army. time away from family. and the toll it took—along with the expectation placed on young Charles to look after his sisters and mother. On the roof that day. Kwedar asked Melton a simple question: “Was something happening for you there as your dad spoke?”.
Melton looked at him. then Kwedar said Melton “was suddenly back there. really back there.” In his mind. Melton was back in the moment. watching his father talk on national TV and wondering why it had taken so long. Kwedar described the way Melton’s eyes seemed to answer him. silently repeating. “Dad. why did it take this long for you to say this. on national TV?” and then. with his eyes. “It’s OK. Dad. I’m OK. Dad. we’re Ok. Dad.” When the moment passed. Kwedar said the two of them were together again—tears in their eyes.
They left that meeting “resolved to make ‘Saturn Return’ together, no matter what,” Kwedar said. It wasn’t the only time he’d seen emotion break open around fathers. He pointed to how Melton’s screen work keeps pulling from that kind of depth. including the actor’s “delightful turn” in “Beef. ” where. Kwedar said. Melton travels “from a naive dreamer to a cunning striver.”.
Melton’s career momentum also includes work in “Warfare. ” as Kwedar referenced. and the recognition that brought him into this moment. Kwedar called Melton the Performance Award recipient in the context of “Beef” and the IndieWire Honors celebration planned for June 4. 2026—an event in Los Angeles honoring creators and stars behind some of the year’s best television series. The program is curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team. with IndieWire showcasing interviews and tributes in the days leading up to the ceremony.
Yet for Kwedar, the story isn’t only about what Melton can do as an actor. It’s about what he brings to the room. Kwedar said the “one main quality” that makes Melton an enhancement to every project is “generosity.” He described a person who would “gladly give you the shirt off his back. ” who delights in surprising people with gifts. who will “swipe the check for a meal on his way to the bathroom. ” and who watches closely to see whether someone is truly enjoying food he cooked from scratch.
That generosity. Kwedar said. extends into performance itself: Melton gives himself to the process. tries ideas “in a take no matter how unexpected and wild. ” and also leans into delicate. nuanced moments. Kwedar said Melton wants to find truth with the people around him and to chase the best for the work—not just for a moment. but for the whole project. He makes himself “big or small” if it helps the team win. Kwedar said. and he makes the company stronger. healthier. and kinder.
The director also tied that spirit to how sets feel. He said Melton gave gratitude to every hand on a set “no matter the size of the job,” and Kwedar told readers that Melton was truly beloved by the cast and crew, with his “soul” shining on their set.
“Beef” Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

I swear actors these days are just good at crying on cue.
So they met on a rooftop and then he “was suddenly back there”?? That’s deep but also kinda sounds like acting training lol. I didn’t even know IndieWire Honors was a thing.
Wait is this about Beef or Sing Sing? The article jumps around like the title said generosity but then it’s about his dad in the Army and looking after sisters… which is sad. Either way, Charles Melton seems like he’d be nice on set, I guess.
Greg Kwedar says he watched a CBS Sunday Morning interview and then the rest of the film “fell away” 😂 ok but like… how is that generosity? Sounds more like method acting or something. Also “Saturn Return”?? That’s probably just Hollywood jargon for scheduling? I’m confused but I’m glad the guy is thoughtful.
