Sen. Chris Coons treated for minor injuries after crash

Democratic Sen. Chris Coons said he was transported to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, after a multi-vehicle crash on Sunday, June 28, and treated for minor injuries. He said he is now home and expected a full, swift recovery.

For Sen. Chris Coons, the shock came with the kind of abruptness that leaves no room for planning: he was a passenger when a driver’s medical incident sent a vehicle into multiple cars on a Delaware roadway.

Coons said the crash happened on Sunday, June 28. In a post on X, he wrote that “a Delaware driver experienced a medical incident and collided with several cars, including one in which I was a passenger.”

He said he was transported to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, where he was treated for minor injuries. Coons added that he is now home and “expected to make a full and swift recovery.”

In his update, Coons also said that no one was seriously injured.

He expressed gratitude for the response, naming the Lewes Police Department, Lewes and Rehoboth Fire Departments, and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services. He also thanked the doctors and nurses at Beebe Hospital, saying he received “excellent care.”

Coons is a Democratic U.S. senator elected in 2010. He is Delaware’s senior U.S. senator and the longest-serving member of the state’s current federal delegation. In the Senate, he serves as vice chair of the Senate Ethics Committee and previously served as chair.

Before coming to Washington, DC, he was New Castle County President and New Castle County Executive.

For now, the emphasis in Coons’ account is on recovery and the rapid response after the crash—along with his insistence that the injuries were minor and that the situation did not involve serious harm to anyone on scene.

  1. Wait so he was in the passenger seat and the other driver had a medical incident? That’s scary. Also Beebe Hospital better than the other one or something? I don’t know.

  2. Beibe Hospital huh. So like… was it his fault? People always say “minor injuries” but those are never really minor later. Hopefully no one got screwed with insurance over it.

  3. “Full and swift recovery” is what they always say when it’s politics, but still glad he’s home. Multi-vehicle crashes are the worst, you never know what actually caused it—like maybe the passenger wasn’t buckled or something? Idk just seems weird that they’re already talking ethics committee while he’s literally in a crash story.
