Social media hunter-gatherer Joel Yukich dies at 35

Reading Time: < 1 minute Joel Yukich, the popular Kiwi social media star known as the hunter-gatherer behind the Blokes Can Cook Too platform, has died at the age of 35. A father of four boys, based in Tokoroa, Yukich is being remembered online for his aroha, laughter and the “hearty kai” he shared with many people throughout his life. Yukich came up with the idea for his Facebook page Blokes Can Cook Too in 2017, and built an audience of more than 116,000 followers

by showcasing his hunting, fishing, diving and cooking skills. Fellow Kiwi influencer Stef the Māori said he understood Yukich had suffered a heart attack. “Waiting for autopsy results to come. Condolences to the whānau. See you soon brother,” he wrote on his Instagram page. A longtime friend identified only as Keegan posted on the Facebook page that “Joel was the loudest and brightest light in every room he went into. This page gave him an outlet to connect with other like-minded fans and creators, allowing

him to forge lifelong friendships through his love of wild kai.” He included in the post that Yukich’s family have set up a Give A Little page, to support them through this tough time. A service will be held today, July 6.
