Jo Adell didn’t just miss a catch on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium—he lived the kind of mistake that instantly follows a player home.

In the top of the fourth inning on June 2, Colorado Rockies designated hitter TJ Rumfield sent a fly ball toward right center field. Adell seemed poised to take it easily in stride, reaching out as the ball carried into Angel Stadium’s twilight sky.

Instead, the ball glanced off his glove, bounced off his cap, and sailed over the yellow line that marks a home run.

The moment carried a brutal sense of déjà vu. The play was described as a near carbon-copy of a 1993 miss at old Municipal Stadium. when Cleveland’s Carlos Martinez hit a similar fly ball toward right field on May 26. 1993. Jose Canseco—then a former outfielder—chased it down. but also missed completely. with the ball bonking off his dome and over the wall. That footage became a viral artifact long before the phrase “viral video” existed.

Adell’s night looked different from that one, even if the setup was painfully similar. He isn’t Canseco. Adell, earlier this year, is credited with a modern record for robbing three home runs in a single game on April 5 against Seattle. This time, though, the ball didn’t get caught.

After Rumfield rounded the bases, the damage was immediate. The last-place Los Angeles Angels trailed the Rockies 8-0.
