Hurricanes tumble in Game 1 after poor puck choices

Hurricanes lost – Carolina fell behind in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final after a 1-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 1, when Nikolaj Ehlers scored twice in the first period but Tomas Hertl delivered the late winner in the third. Rod Brind’Amour said the difference was Caro

The Carolina Hurricanes looked like the team ready to dictate the 2026 Stanley Cup Final early in Game 1. They limited the Vegas Golden Knights’ shots on goal, dominated the ice in all the usual ways, and were in control.

Then, slowly, that grip disappeared.

Nikolaj Ehlers gave Carolina a jolt in the first period with two goals. but the Hurricanes couldn’t keep Vegas out of a dangerous rhythm. Tomas Hertl struck late in the third period, scoring the game-winning goal, and Vegas held on to win Game 1. By the time Tuesday night ended, Carolina was no longer just playing catch-up—it was trailing in the Final.

Rod Brind’Amour didn’t dress it up. In his view. the swing came from Carolina losing its defensive structure and making too many bad choices with the puck when the game tightened. “We kind of made a few poor decisions with the puck. and they capitalized. ” the Hurricanes head coach said. via team reporter Walt Ruff. Brind’Amour also pointed to what happened right after Vegas applied pressure. “They made some mistakes when we got in on them. We made too many under that pressure, too. That’s the game,” he continued on Tuesday night, via Sportsnet.

For Carolina, the loss landed with extra weight because of how rare it has been this postseason. The Hurricanes have lost just for the second time in these Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their only other defeat came to the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals. before Carolina went on to dominate that matchup by winning in five games.

This time, the Hurricanes don’t get the same luxury of a quick reset. Brind’Amour’s comments carried a clear message into Game 2: Carolina may have the talent to trouble Vegas. but it likely won’t be able to rely on the “classic” version of its game if the defensive structure and puck decisions don’t tighten up.

He specifically mentioned wanting more from top stars like Sebastian Aho. If Carolina gets that kind of step up alongside fewer mistakes under pressure, the series has room to turn. If it doesn’t, the Golden Knights will keep pressing into the moments where Carolina’s game has shown cracks.

Game 2 will be played in North Carolina on Thursday night, with the Hurricanes hoping to avoid heading to Las Vegas down 2-0.
