Jen Shah is speaking out as her federal prison sentence concludes.
The former “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star, 52, marked the end of her sentence Friday, Aug. 28, four years after pleading guilty to defrauding people through a nationwide telemarketing scheme in 2022. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Shah said this is “the closing of a chapter that changed my life and my family forever.”
“I made decisions that had serious consequences, and I accept those consequences,” she continued. “I’ve had years to look honestly at my own choices – the people I trusted and allowed into my life, the red flags I ignored, the questions I should have asked, and the moments when I should have stopped and listened to my instincts. I can see those things today in a way I couldn’t then, and I take responsibility for the decisions that were mine.”
Jen Shah prison sentence reduced over the years
The TV personality served two years and 10 months behind bars for one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and was released in December after her sentence was reduced several times. She was originally given a six-and-a-half-year sentence – significantly less than the prosecution’s recommended sentencing range of 11 to 14 years.
“Moving forward doesn’t mean forgetting that real people were hurt or treating the consequences of this chapter lightly. I carry that awareness with me, and I always will,” Shah said in her statement. “But I’ve also learned that acknowledging your past doesn’t mean you have to live in it. I can’t change the chapters I’ve already lived, but I can decide what I do with what they taught me. Today, more than anything, I feel grateful, hopeful and genuinely excited about the future.”
Shah added that “for a very long time,” others told her story while wasn’t able to to. She said “there is a lot people know about my story, and there is also a lot they don’t – including the reasons behind some of the most difficult decisions I made.”
“I’m not interested in relitigating the past. I’m interested in what comes next. And for the first time in a very long time, I have my voice back and the freedom to decide what that next chapter looks like,” she added. “I’m ready to work. I’m ready to create. I’m ready to laugh, have meaningful conversations, reconnect with people and build things I’m proud of. There are projects ahead that I’m incredibly excited about, and I’ll share more when the time is right.”
As the reality star celebrated her official release this week, she and her husband, Sharrieff “Coach” Shah, also celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary, which she said is especially meaningful after being incarcerated.
“I don’t know that I can adequately put into words what that means to me,” she said. “After 32 years of marriage, I look at my husband and understand in an entirely different way what it means to have someone truly stand beside you – in the beautiful moments and in the ones you never imagined you’d have to survive.”
Shah praised her husband’s “love, loyalty, strength and faith” and said being home with him for their anniversary is “a gift.” She further expressed her gratitude for him, their sons and the rest of her family for supporting her “through some of the hardest days of our lives.”
“I’ve learned that winning doesn’t always look the way you once thought it would,” Shah said. “Today, winning is being home. It’s my marriage. It’s my sons. It’s my family. It’s my faith. It’s having another chance to wake up and choose what I do with everything life has taught me.
“Today, I feel blessed. I feel free. And I’m excited to see what happens next,” she concluded.
