Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic freestyle needles Drake and others

Jay-Z Roots – Jay-Z used a surprise Roots Picnic freestyle on Saturday, May 30, in Philadelphia to aim bars at Drake, Ye (Kanye West) and Nicki Minaj, while also marking the 30th anniversary of “Reasonable Doubt.”
Jay-Z didn’t ease into the moment. He walked onstage at Roots Picnic on Saturday, May 30, in Philadelphia—his first solo headlining performance in years—and then, minutes into his set, he cut the mic into a cappella territory and started speaking in riddles.
The freestyle came during a celebration of the 30th anniversary of his debut album. “Reasonable Doubt. ” and it quickly sparked debate among fans. In one of the clearest lines of the night. Jay-Z rapped: “The jig is up / We got up 10 / Wrong chart champ / You gotta look up again / [People] look up to Hov / I never looked up to them.”.
Many listeners interpreted that as a diss aimed at Drake. whose recent album “Iceman” includes multiple tracks with shots at Jay-Z. On “Janice. ” Drake rapped “The jig is up. ” and on “Whisper My Name. ” he used a reference to internet meme debates with the line “I’ll take $500K. not the dinner / I never could learn [anything] from none of y’all.”.
The timing of Jay-Z’s freestyle landed on a bigger web of strained relationships that have played out publicly for years. The former “Light Up” and “Pound Cake” collaborators—now in what fans often frame as a back-and-forth—have reportedly soured in recent years. One flashpoint cited in the wider feud narrative was Jay-Z’s role with Roc Nation. which oversees the Super Bowl halftime show. including putting Kendrick Lamar on the headlining stage after Kendrick’s notorious beef with Drake.
That same evening, Jay-Z didn’t just stop at Drake. He also went after Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, picking up on controversy that surfaced in a 2025 X rant where Ye made derogatory comments about Jay-Z’s children.
“You ever heard of wunderkind? / My children are some of them,” Jay-Z rapped, using the German word for child prodigy. He followed with: “Have you [people] have no shame? / You trying to get under skin? / I’ll really get under skin.”
The breakdown between Jay-Z and Ye traces back to 2016, when personal and business disputes began pushing their relationship off course.
Nicki Minaj didn’t get a pass either. Jay-Z delivered more direct apparent shots at the rapper, who has spent recent years on social media making various claims against Jay-Z and his label, Roc Nation.
“That lady back on that stuff / She sounds like she’s in love with ’em / Her Ken can’t even pick up they kid / Enough of them,” Jay rapped.
Minaj is married to convicted sex offender Kenneth Petty, and she has long used the moniker Barbie—making “her Ken” a pointed reference. Fans have also tied Minaj’s ongoing posts to the broader feud culture surrounding all three figures.
By the end of the set. the message felt less like a one-off joke and more like a snapshot of where these relationships stand right now—because Jay-Z wasn’t only trading wordplay. He was stepping into the same public arena where Drake’s “Iceman” lyrics. Ye’s 2025 comments. and Minaj’s online claims have already been colliding.
Jay-Z’s “Reasonable Doubt” celebration run isn’t stopping with Roots Picnic. He is set to continue the anniversary festivities, including marking the 25th anniversary of “The Blueprint” with a trio of hometown performances at Yankee Stadium in July.
