Jason Dickinson returns to Oilers on five-year deal

Jason Dickinson has re-signed with the Edmonton Oilers on a five-year, $20-million contract, returning after a mid-season trade from the Chicago Blackhawks. The deal is worth an average annual value of $4 million.

Jason Dickinson didn’t have to go far to find his way back.

On Sunday, the Edmonton Oilers announced they’ve signed the centre to a five-year contract worth $20 million, with an average annual value of $4 million. It’s the kind of move that can bring stability to a lineup—especially when a team is already searching for answers after a painful playoff exit.

Dickinson’s season began with the Chicago Blackhawks, but halfway through the year he was traded to the Oilers alongside Colton Dach. In return, Edmonton sent Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional first-round pick.

The production shifted after the trade. With the Oilers, Dickinson finished the regular season with just four points—one goal and three assists. The playoffs, though, told a different story. He posted two goals and an assist in four playoff games. giving Edmonton something to build on even as the postseason ended sooner than they wanted.

Overall, last season was a tough one for Dickinson in terms of point totals. He finished with seven goals and 10 assists in 64 games, his second straight campaign in which he failed to reach 20 points.

At 30 years old, Dickinson is no stranger to moving through chapters of the NHL. The 2013 first-round pick—taken 29th overall—has 172 points in 566 career games, with 75 goals and 97 assists. His path started with the Stars, where his NHL career began and he ultimately spent six seasons in Dallas. From there, he played one year with the Vancouver Canucks before moving on to Chicago, where he logged 3.5 seasons.

Now he’s back with an Oilers team that finished second in the Pacific Division, then ran into a familiar disappointment: they were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2021.

Dickinson’s re-signing is part of what general manager Stan Bowman has been working through during a lengthy off-season checklist. Next on the list could be bigger decisions—potentially hiring a coach, weighing the future of longtime defenceman Darnell Nurse, and upgrading the goaltending position.
