Ireland can seal World Cup spot vs Netherlands

Who needs – The Republic of Ireland can book a place at the Women’s World Cup for only the second time in their history if they win their remaining games—starting with the Netherlands in Cork on Friday at 19:30—while Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland face different rou

The moment the Republic of Ireland step onto the pitch in Cork, the pressure won’t be theoretical. It will be immediate.

Ireland are third in their group, yet their fate is still firmly in their own hands. They face the Netherlands in Cork on Friday at 19:30, before travelling to France for their final fixture on Tuesday at 20:00. If they win both matches. they will seal a place at the World Cup—for only the second time in their history—regardless of results elsewhere.

That “regardless” matters. It means Ireland aren’t waiting on anyone else’s mistake or someone else’s miracle. Two wins would turn this campaign into something closer to a full stop: done, secured, confirmed.

Across the rest of the qualifying picture, the routes are tighter and the stakes shift.

Scotland are in top spot before back-to-back fixtures against Israel. They play on Friday at 17:00 and again on Tuesday at 18:00. Their position in the group means Scotland have already secured a play-off spot with two games to spare. For them. the question is no longer whether they reach the play-offs—it’s what they can build now that they already know they’re going.

Wales, meanwhile, are second in their group, separated from the top only by margins. They are behind Czech Republic on goal difference. Wales host Czech Republic on Tuesday at 18:00 after travelling to Montenegro on Friday at 17:00.

Then there’s Northern Ireland, where the situation is blunt. They need a point from their final games—one away and one at home—to secure a play-off berth. They face Turkey on Friday at 18:00, before hosting Switzerland on Tuesday at 18:00.

The pattern across the League B groups is clear: reaching the play-offs extends hope, but it doesn’t end the journey. Even after the extra round comes into play, teams will still have to navigate two rounds in the autumn to get to Brazil.

So while Ireland can still force a clean, all-clear path with two wins, the others are working within a narrower set of outcomes—each match a step either toward certainty, or toward the grind of having to fight for it again later.

  1. I don’t get it, the article says they need wins but also says it’s about other results. Like which one is it? Either way, Netherlands in Cork is gonna be wild.

  2. “Full stop done secured confirmed” lol they really wrote it like a contract. Also why are they talking about Brazil if this is 2027? Did I miss a whole tournament change?

  3. Scotland already secured playoffs so it’s easy for them, but Ireland still “pressure won’t be theoretical”?? That sounds like nothing. And Northern Ireland just need a point?? That’s how people end up losing anyway.
