FIFA reverses water bottle ban after outcry over heat

FIFA reverses – FIFA has overturned its World Cup 2026 stadium water bottle ban, allowing fans attending matches in the United States and Canada to bring one soft, plastic, factory-sealed disposable bottle. The climbdown follows days of public fury over the earlier rule chang

For days, fans pictured themselves turning up to World Cup 2026 stadiums only to be met with sealed-water restrictions—and then watched FIFA rewrite the rules as heat forecasts loomed.

Now the governing body has made a dramatic turn. FIFA confirmed that supporters attending World Cup 2026 matches in the United States and Canada will be permitted to bring one soft. plastic. factory-sealed disposable water bottle into stadiums. It is a significant climbdown after days of public outrage over the controversial ban.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi confirmed the updated policy, while drawing a firm line elsewhere. Hard-sided, reusable water bottles will still be prohibited on safety and security grounds.

The reversal comes only days after FIFA sparked fury by updating its stadium code of conduct to ban reusable water bottles entirely—a last-minute switch that left many fans incensed given sweltering conditions expected throughout the tournament.

Experts have predicted that 93 percent of matches will be played in temperatures exceeding 28°C (82.4°F).

The anger that followed the initial ban spread quickly on social media. Supporters branded the move ‘a disgrace’ and raised fears over what it would mean for fan safety in American host cities during summer heat.

The outrage sharpened because FIFA’s rules appeared to shift recently. Just three weeks ago. FIFA’s official Stadium Code of Conduct included a clause stating: ‘For the avoidance of doubt. empty. transparent. reusable plastic bottles. up to (1 liter in) capacity. may be brought into the Stadium.’ Then. on June 2. the code of conduct was reportedly updated to instead read: ‘For the avoidance of doubt. reusable water bottles may not be brought into the stadium.’.

On X, reactions were swift and furious. ‘This is absolutely shocking. FIFA have become a dystopian parody of what they are meant to be,’ one user wrote. Another posted: ‘That’s a disgrace. Basic human right removed and now fans made to spend more $$. Like they’re not already going to be spending enough. Greedy.’ A third predicted: ‘Those drinks are going to be absolutely shocking in price. Water will be $10 at least. The scandal just keeps getting bigger.’.

The backdrop for those fears is already familiar to supporters heading to US venues. At last summer’s Club World Cup in the US, FIFA charged between $4 and $6 for bottled water amid similar concerns about sweltering temperatures.

What fans will face this summer in the World Cup is still not clear. It is currently unclear how much FIFA will charge at this summer’s World Cup, with water brand Dasani expected to be sold in the venues.

There is now a tighter question hanging over stadium entry policies: FIFA has loosened its stance on sealed bottles after public pushback—but the price of hydration once inside remains the thing fans say will determine whether the tournament feels safe, or just more expensive in the heat.

  1. Wait why did they ban reusable bottles in the first place? Like are they trying to make people buy stadium drinks only or what. If it’s gonna be 90+ degrees they should just let people bring whatever.

  2. This reads like FIFA panicked when everyone complained online, then changed it last second. Also the whole “factory-sealed disposable” part is weird to me—like what, we’re recycling the bottle after? And 93% over 82 degrees sounds made up because my cousin said it’ll be fine.

  3. They “reversed” it but only soft, plastic, factory-sealed one bottle? That’s still kind of ridiculous. If someone forgets or buys the wrong thing at the gate they’re just gonna get turned away in heat… I don’t trust FIFA at all after that June 2 switch.
