Charles Barkley warns against breaking Celtics’ core

Charles Barkley says trade talk about splitting Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown is a mistake for the Celtics, arguing that players should want to play alongside other stars rather than chase a “clean slate.”

Charles Barkley sounded almost incredulous when he was asked about the Celtics potentially breaking up their franchise duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown this offseason.

The NBA Hall of Famer and on-air personality has spent the weekend reacting to the trade rumors swirling around Boston after a disheartening first-round exit at the hands of the 76ers. And while the Celtics have continued to be linked to Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo — a two-time MVP who has drawn attention as a destination — Barkley said any plan that requires moving on from an established star like Brown would be misguided.

The way the rumor mill works. Barkley explained. is that acquiring a talent like Antetokounmpo would likely mean Boston moving Brown in a three-team deal. Brown, for his part, has also been tied to his own wave of chatter this summer. Reports have circulated about teams like the Hawks coveting the talented wing. and Tracy McGrady has signaled that Brown has grown frustrated with his current standing with the Celtics.

Barkley’s frustration wasn’t about the existence of trade talk — it was about what it asks players to do after all that work building a contender.

“I think these guys are so stupid at times. ” Barkley said on ESPN’s “Get Up.” “I never understand why guys don’t want to play with other great players. This notion that you have to have an A or B. When I got traded to Phoenix and played with Kevin Johnson and Dan Majerle. I was thrilled to play with two other great players. You just want to win. It’s not about the individual accolades.”.

He framed the question to the two stars at the center of the Celtics’ off-season tension. If the goal was championships, Barkley argued, the better move is staying together.

“If I’m Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, I’m like, ‘Man, I’m going to play with another great player for 10 years.’” Barkley said. “Maybe we win multiple championships. I don’t give a damn whose team it is. I just think this whole situation is, ‘What the hell you want? You want to win.’”

The Celtics’ offseason picture is crowded with pressure, and Barkley acknowledged the league has shifted in the West and elsewhere. He pointed to the ascension of both the Thunder and Spurs, as well as the Knicks’ current dominance this postseason. Even with that backdrop, though, he urged Boston not to make drastic changes with its core.

“I don’t understand it to be honest with you,” Barkley said. “It’s hard to win. If you don’t have other good players, you might have individual success but if you don’t have other great players, you aren’t going to win. I think the whole situation is silly and stupid.”

He added that what matters most is the chance to build something lasting rather than gamble on a reset.

“I would want to play with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. I want to play with both of those guys for multiple times in my career and let the chips fall where they may.”

Shaquille O’Neal’s take landed in a similar place. On “The Rich Eisen Show” last week, when asked what needs to change with the Celtics moving forward, O’Neal said, “I don’t think they should break up the Jays.”

O’Neal argued the Celtics don’t need to fracture the partnership that has defined them.

“They just have to learn how to have better in-game adjustments. The Celtics. you know they’re going to die by the jump-shot and live by the jump shot.” O’Neal said. “It’s tough to watch. When it’s falling it looks petty. but you have to have that mentality of. ‘hey I just missed two threes. let me go take a high-percentage shot.’ That’s why they lost.”.

Barkley’s bottom line was blunt: after everything, he sees the most value in keeping Boston’s best pieces together — especially when trade talk would require undoing the very chemistry the Celtics built around Tatum and Brown.
