Introducing the Fast Company Pacesetters

Not long ago, using AI to optimize customer experience meant a chatbot, often a frustratingly limited one. Now, just a couple years later, it means a steady and constantly evolving conversation between companies and the humans they serve—one where AI agents anticipate needs, fix problems, and make decisions at blazing speed. If you have customers, this shift is affecting you.
Enter Fast Company’s Pacesetters program, a new recognition program presented by Tata Consultancy Services. The Pacesetters program aims to track and celebrate a rich new vein of innovation in the AI age: the intersection of technology and the customer journey. (Here’s how we selected the winners.) “Progress happens when vision is matched with execution, and the executives honored this year exemplify what it means to lead with purpose and build for what comes next,” says Amit Bajaj, president of TCS North America.
At AWS, for example, Ruba Borno helped reinvent the AWS Marketplace with agents that help cloud customers choose from the 30,000 software solutions on offer. At Yum Brands, Cameron Davies’s team built a tool called Byte by Yum to support KFCs and Pizza Huts with mobile app ordering, delivery optimization, menu management, and more. And at Virgin Atlantic, Neil Letchford’s team deployed a multi-agent conversational “concierge” to sand the edges off the stress of complex travel bookings.
These are just a handful of the honorees who make up this inaugural class of 40 Pacesetters. Together, they show the meaningful, measurable impact of AI in the everyday moments when customers decide whether a company is truly working for them.

The company’s AI and robotics platform uses computer vision to guide sperm injection, adjust force to egg resistance in real time, and it applies machine learning to embryo metabolism to predict implantation. By building an operation that standardizes installation, operator training, and protocol validation, Overture Life has helped clinics across the UAE, Turkey, Central Europe, and Latin America reach validated clinical use in weeks rather than years. The system has led to a 98.3% egg survival rate and produced 12% more viable embryos for transfer than manual methods—giving more people, in more places, a better chance at having a child. “,”ctaText”:””,”ctaUrl”:””,”theme”:{“bg”:”#f5f5f5″,”text”:”#000000″,”eyebrow”:”#2b2d30″,”subhed”:”#2b2d30″,”buttonBg”:”#3b3f46″,”buttonHoverBg”:”#3b3f46″,”buttonText”:”#ffffff”},”imageDesktopId”:0,”imageMobileId”:0,”shareable”:true,”slug”:”hans-gangeskar”,”wpCssClasses”:””}}

He was the senior engineering leader in the development of a customer assistant called AI Concierge, swiftly moving it from a two-month proof of concept to a live, multi-agent customer experience. The insight behind the concierge was that booking holiday travel is often a complicated, stressful decision-making process, and the reason human representatives often succeed in guiding customers through it is because they’re able to learn important contextual information (like family size, travel preferences, etc.). Letchford’s team trained the AI to uncover those preferences conversationally, helping customers move from vague ideas (like a desire for a sunny destination) to relevant options and then bookings. “,”ctaText”:””,”ctaUrl”:””,”theme”:{“bg”:”#f5f5f5″,”text”:”#000000″,”eyebrow”:”#2b2d30″,”subhed”:”#2b2d30″,”buttonBg”:”#3b3f46″,”buttonHoverBg”:”#3b3f46″,”buttonText”:”#ffffff”},”imageDesktopId”:0,”imageMobileId”:0,”shareable”:true,”slug”:”neil-letchford”,”wpCssClasses”:””}}
