Indy 500 forecast turns tense as rain looms Sunday

Indy 500 – As the Indianapolis 500 heads into Memorial Day weekend, forecasts call for mostly cloudy, humid conditions on Saturday and occasional showers with scattered thunderstorms on Sunday, May 24—raising the possibility of delays during race day festivities.

The Indianapolis 500 is a spectacle built for sunshine and noise—more than 300,000 spectators each year spilling into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year, the crowd’s plans could hinge on something far less predictable: the weather.

Saturday’s forecast is mostly cloudy and humid, with a low of 59 degrees and a high of 73 degrees. The race weekend is traditionally held during Memorial Day weekend, and this year’s Indy 500 faces the clear risk of wet conditions hanging over both the track and the surrounding festivities.

By Sunday, May 24—the day of the race—forecasts turn more cautious. The prediction calls for cloudy, humid conditions with occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to peak around 76 degrees, with lows around 60 degrees. Those conditions can translate quickly into delays. which is why fans are being urged to stay weather-aware and be ready for rapidly changing conditions.

The forecast also offers a measure of relief for Monday, May 25. Conditions are expected to improve to mostly cloudy skies, with highs near 79 degrees and lows around 63 degrees.

Forecast details for the Indy weekend are tied to AccuWeather’s outlook. Saturday, May 23 is listed as cloudy and humid, with a low of 59F and a high of 73F. Sunday, May 24 is listed as cloudy and humid with showers and a thunderstorm, with a low of 60F and a high of 75F.

The timing is what makes the weekend feel fragile: Saturday looks manageable, then Sunday brings the heavier uncertainty right when the stands fill for the main event. If thunderstorms roll in as forecast, the risk isn’t just comfort—it’s the schedule itself.

The Indianapolis 500 is set to air on television on FOX, which holds the broadcast rights to IndyCar. Fans can also stream the race on FOX One, FOX’s official streaming service. Fubo, a cable alternative offering a free trial, will stream the Indy 500 as well.

Here are the key viewing details listed for the broadcast: the date is Sunday, May 23; the start time is 12:45 p.m. ET; the TV channel is FOX; and the streaming options include FOX One and Fubo.

  1. Sunday May 24 thunderstorms?? That’s gonna mess everything up for sure. I don’t even know why people go if it’s “occasional showers” like that can’t be predicted at all lol.

  2. Wait it says the Indy 500 starts 12:45 p.m. ET on Sunday May 23… but the race day is May 24? They got the dates wrong or I’m missing something. Either way I’m just gonna watch on FOX One because cable is a scam.

  3. Growing up in Indiana it always rains on holiday weekends, like the weather gods hate Memorial Day or something. Hopefully the forecast “improves Monday” doesn’t mean they delay the whole day Sunday then drag it out. Also 76 degrees sounds fine but humid + storms is a nightmare, I feel bad for anyone in the stands.
