Peak of the Atlantic hurricane season arrives
The entire Atlantic Ocean is now open for tropical development as we enter late August. AccuWeather’s Bernie Rayno explains why.
Karina, now a Category 4 hurricane, continues to head into open water over the Pacific Ocean as the National Hurricane Center continues to track another storm in the Pacific.
The hurricane has maximum sustained winds of about 145 mph and is traveling west at 9 mph, according to AccuWeather. It is located about 1,020 miles from the southern tip of Baja California in northwestern Mexico.
As of Monday, Aug. 31, at 10:30 a.m. ET, there were no coastal warnings in effect due to Hurricane Karina. While it continues to travel west, according to the National Hurricane Center, it is expected to turn west-northwest starting Tuesday, Sept. 1. It could continue to strengthen throughout Monday.
While the hurricane is not expected to make landfall, swells created by the hurricane could affect the coast of southwest Mexico and Baja California, as well as Southern California, per the National Hurricane Center. Swells generated by the hurricane are “likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”
The National Hurricane Center is also tracking Tropical Storm Lowell, which could be near the Hawaiian Islands later in the week. As of Monday, the storm has maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph and is traveling west at 12 mph.
The storm may become a hurricane by Monday or Tuesday night as it could continue to strengthen in the coming days.
