HS2 bus diversions in Birmingham: routes affected for up to 18 months

HS2 bus – From 10 May, HS2 works on Saltley Viaduct will trigger diversions for several Birmingham bus routes for as long as 18 months.
Birmingham commuters are being warned to expect bus route changes next month as HS2 construction affects the Saltley Viaduct.
The first knock-on disruption begins on 10 May. when National Express West Midlands services are reshaped while the viaduct works are carried out.. The reason is practical: the current bridge is not tall enough for HS2 to pass underneath. so a new viaduct is being built to meet the area’s future transport needs.
Because the closure and associated work can last for up to 18 months. the impact is likely to be felt well beyond a short-term diversion.. Passengers are being urged to plan ahead. with the clear message that journeys may take longer depending on which route you use and how diversions interact with busy roads.. For regular riders. even small route shifts can mean different stops. slightly different travel times. and more planning for daily routines.
The changes start with the 8A and 8C routes.. From next month, both services will keep their frequency, but their path through the city will change.. The 8C service heading towards Aston will divert from Adderley Road. continue via Washwood Heath Road. take a left onto Aston Church Road. another left onto Heartlands Parkway. and then rejoin the usual route after the junction with Saltley Viaduct.. The 8A service to Bordesley Green will run on the reverse diversion pattern.
Other routes also face adjustments.. The 14 service heading towards Birmingham will divert away from Alum Rock Road. turn left onto Adderley Road. right onto Duddeston Mill Road. and then rejoin the normal route after the junction with Devon Street.. During this period, Devon Street, Alderflat Place, and Mainstream Way will not be served on the diversion.. For the 14 service heading towards Chelmsley Wood. buses will follow the reverse of the outward route. with all bus stops covered along the diversion itinerary.
Finally, services 94 and 95 are also affected.. Routes towards Birmingham will divert from Washwood Heath Road. turn right onto Aston Church Road. left onto Heartlands Parkway. and then rejoin after the junction with Saltley Viaduct.. For buses heading towards Chelmsley Wood, the pattern runs in reverse.. If you’re travelling to or from Saltley Gate. the guidance is more specific: you may need to change onto services 8A & 8C at Washwood Heath Road or Nechells Parkway.
These diversions are a reminder of how infrastructure projects ripple through everyday travel networks—even when the underlying change is about rail.. Viaduct upgrades are often planned around engineering constraints. but the street-level consequence is immediate: buses must reroute around work zones. bridge clearances. and closures.. In a city where a portion of trips depend on predictable stop locations. that can create frustration quickly. especially for commuters balancing work timetables or school drop-offs.
There’s also a wider behavioural impact.. When diversions last months instead of days. riders tend to adjust: some switch routes. others alter departure times. and many rely more heavily on journey planning in the days before and after the change takes effect.. The practical question for passengers is whether extra minutes are manageable—and for frequent users. how to avoid missing connections when changes require switching services. as with Saltley Gate.
Looking ahead. the most useful approach is to treat May’s adjustments as the start of an extended period rather than a one-off event.. The bus network may continue to refine routing as construction progresses. but the basic theme—long-duration disruption linked to Saltley Viaduct—remains.. Those who keep an eye on route updates and identify the nearest diversion stops early are likely to have the smoothest experience when the changes fully settle into daily life.
