How BofA Rewards turns World Cup trips into perks

With the FIFA World Cup 2026™ coming to 16 U.S. host cities from June through mid-July, Bank of America is pitching BofA Rewards as a way to stretch everyday spending—travel, dining, and fan gear—into layered bonuses, partner offers, and higher-tier perks.

When the FIFA World Cup 2026™ kicks off across the U.S. it won’t just rearrange calendars—it will rearrange wallets. The tournament runs with 48 nations competing across 16 host cities from June through mid-July. and for many fans. the same weeks that bring match tickets and stadium plans also bring flights. hotel bookings. food runs. and team-shop splurges.

Bank of America’s BofA Rewards program is built around that momentum. positioning the event as a chance to earn more from regular banking and spending. The pitch is straightforward: there’s no minimum balance required to join. and members can turn everyday purchases into higher-value rewards as they move through different tiers.

The goal is a simple one—don’t aim to earn rewards once. but to stack them across the full run-up to the tournament. The program’s game plan is built around three steps: layering other loyalty programs. matching spending to eligible credit cards. and letting BofA Rewards add on top through its bonus structures and member perks.

The first move is about double-dipping. Before making any FIFA World Cup 2026™ purchases. the program encourages fans to enroll in loyalty and reward programs with the brands and retailers they already plan to use. If you’re traveling to a host city. that means signing up for your airline’s frequent flyer program and a hotel loyalty program before you book. so points or miles are earned on the same purchases you would make anyway. If you’re buying fan gear, retailer programs can add discounts or exclusive deals. For people stocking up at home—especially for game-day hosting—grocery and food delivery apps with built-in rewards are framed as another opportunity. Even “where to watch” can be part of the plan: fans are told to check whether bars or restaurants have loyalty programs and to watch for event-themed food and drink deals.

The second step is matching spending to the right card. FIFA World Cup 2026™ spend, the program suggests, tends to cluster in a few places: travel, dining, and online shopping. It’s in those categories that choosing an eligible Bank of America credit card matters. with the program pointing to flexible ways to earn more based on where you shop most. Eligible Bank of America credit cards can also come with opportunities for greater rewards for new cardholders during their first year.

Then comes the part BofA Rewards places at the center of the strategy: turning each purchase into multiple earning opportunities through its credit card rewards bonus. Members can receive a 10% to 75% credit card rewards bonus on top of the eligible Bank of America credit card’s existing bonus. depending on tier:.

Member (10% bonus), Preferred Plus (25% bonus), Preferred Honors (50% bonus), Premier (75% bonus).

That means the same purchase can earn more without changing behavior—at least in the way the program is designed. Beyond the bonus. BofA Rewards members can access exclusive cash-back offers at more than 15. 000 popular brands through Bank of America’s Deals platform. Those deals are described as spanning grocery stores, food-delivery platforms, travel brands, fan-gear retailers, and local restaurants. The program also suggests checking Deals for local restaurants when you want to watch a match away from home. with the idea that a simple night out can add up faster than you might expect.

Higher tiers expand the benefits further. Members at higher tiers can access fee-free ATM access and subscription credits aimed at live play-by-play audio coverage with SiriusXM. Lifestyle benefits are also described as available across travel. food and wine. arts and entertainment. and more—though the program notes that these lifestyle benefits come through third-party vendors not affiliated with Bank of America.

Behind the scenes, BofA Rewards membership and tier movement are also spelled out clearly. Customers can enroll and maintain membership if they have an open, qualifying Bank of America checking account. BofA Rewards tiers are based on each customer’s combined average balance in qualifying deposit and investment accounts. The minimum balance for each tier is:.

Member: no minimum balance
Preferred Plus: $30,000
Preferred Honors: $100,000
Premier: $1,000,000

When a customer enrolls. they’re placed in the appropriate tier for their combined average balance and then moved to the highest tier they’re eligible for based on one of two methods: for the 30 calendar days following the first enrollment. the combined end-of-day collected balance of qualifying accounts (Daily Balance). as long as the Daily Balance remains above the required amount for at least three business days; or. after that. the combined average balance calculated on the third business day of each month. Eligible customers are moved to the higher tier within 3 business days. and new tier benefits may take up to 30 days to become effective.

For the credit-card bonus mechanics, the program is explicit. Certain credit cards are eligible to receive a BofA Rewards bonus. Enrolled BofA Rewards members with eligible Bank of America credit cards can receive a BofA Rewards bonus of 10% for the Member tier. 25% for the Preferred Plus tier. 50% for the Preferred Honors tier. or 75% for the Premier tier. If the card receives the 10% customer bonus, the BofA Rewards bonus replaces the 10% customer bonus. For eligible cash rewards credit cards. the BofA Rewards bonus is applied after all base and bonus cash rewards are calculated on a purchase. The example given is a $100 purchase earning 3% ($3.00), which would actually earn $3.30, $3.75, $4.50, or $5.25 depending on tier when the purchase posts.

For other eligible card types. a purchase that earns 100 base points earns 110. 125. 150. or 175 points based on tier when the purchase posts. The program also states the BofA Rewards bonus does not apply to the bonus earn for certain programs. and it is not applied to any account opening bonus or non-standard rewards part of a special offer unless otherwise indicated. Program Rules are said to be mailed upon account opening and are accessible through the rewards redemption site via Online Banking or by calling the number on the back of the card.

Subscription credits are available only for members at the Preferred Honors or Premier tiers. and eligibility requires agreeing to the full terms via the Subscription Credit Benefit page and making payments directly to eligible merchants using a Bank of America debit card linked to a checking account designated through the subscription credit benefit page. The program says customers may receive statement credits up to $8 per month for Preferred Honors members and $15 per month for Premier members. Eligible merchants are subject to change without notice, with currently eligible merchants listed on the subscription credit benefit page.

Lifestyle benefits similarly require Preferred Honors or Premier tier enrollment. These offers are provided by third-party vendors. the terms and fulfillment are the responsibility of the third parties. and Bank of America does not provide customer information to the third-party vendors. It also notes that contacting vendors to take advantage of an offer will identify you as a Bank of America customer. and that some offers may be open only to a limited number of BofA Rewards members. The program further adds that offers can change without notice. and participants must be 21 years of age or older to participate in offers that include alcohol.

The takeaway is aimed at fans who want their World Cup plans to do more than just provide memories. The program encourages people to unlock benefits as a member with no minimum balance. access elevated perks as tier grows. and turn everyday purchases—whether you’re cheering from the stands. streaming from your sofa. or watching from a favorite restaurant—into more than just the cost of being there.

For anyone looking to understand how the program works and what benefits may apply, the BofA Rewards website is listed as the place to start. The program is described as banking services provided by Bank of America, N.A., Member FDIC, with full terms and conditions available at bofa.com/bofarewards.

  1. I don’t trust rewards like that. It always sounds free but then you gotta spend a ton anyway. World Cup tickets are already crazy expensive.

  2. Wait, is this the one where they cancel your perks if you miss a tier or whatever? Like if you don’t swipe at the right time they just… take it away? That’s what it sounds like to me, idk.

  3. Bank of America is using the World Cup to get people into higher-tier rewards, okay, but I’m still stuck on the ‘no minimum balance’ part. Like do they mean literally none at all? Also 16 host cities, June through mid-July… that’s basically every weekend so you’re just buying flights and fan gear anyway. Feels like they’re just trying to turn spending into coupons, which is fine if it’s real.
