Vingegaard solos again as Giro lead balloons

Vingegaard’s fourth – Jonas Vingegaard won the Giro d’Italia’s 16th stage in Carì for his fourth victory in four mountain-top finishes, extending his overall lead to more than four minutes while Felix Gall moved into second overall.

When Jonas Vingegaard launched his attack with 6.6 kilometers remaining in Carì, the break didn’t just stretch—it evaporated. No rider could stay with Team Visma-Lease a Bike’s wheel as the Giro d’Italia’s 16th stage arrived at a top-category climb on the route that crossed into Switzerland.

Vingegaard rode to a solo victory at the end of the tough stage and made it four wins out of four mountain-top finishes in this year’s race. The win came atop Blockhaus. Corno alle Scale and Pila—his fourth summit triumph—and it also marked something different for the Danish rider: a first victory while wearing the race leader’s pink jersey.

The timing of the attack carried the day. Halfway up the final top-category slog to the finish, Vingegaard surged, and by the time the roads turned toward the line, Felix Gall was left to chase. Vingegaard crossed first and beat Gall by 69 seconds. Jai Hindley arrived another two seconds back.

Those gaps reshuffled the overall standings in a way that will change how the rest of the race is ridden. Gall moved into second overall, 4:03 behind Vingegaard. Thymen Arensman is third, 4:27 back.

Not everyone could hold on to the shape of the Giro’s front week. Afonso Eulálio, who had worn pink for nine stages before ceding it atop Pila on Saturday, dropped from second to fifth after cracking on the final climb. He finished three minutes after Vingegaard.

For Tuesday’s stage, the route measured 113 kilometers (70 miles), stretching from Bellinzona to Carì and featuring five classified climbs. Wednesday’s 17th stage returns to Italy for a 202-kilometer (126-mile) ride from Cassano d’Adda to Andolo, with three third-category climbs.

The Giro d’Italia ends on Sunday in Rome. The women’s race runs from May 30 to June 7.

  1. So he won 4 mountain finishes in a row and now it’s like already decided?? I don’t even watch cycling but that sounds kinda wild. Also 69 seconds like that’s nothing right, but I guess in bike terms it is.

  2. Wait I thought pink means fastest overall right? But it says he got his first win wearing the leader’s jersey, so like… he wasn’t leader before? Confusing. And Switzerland in the middle of the Giro always throws me off, like why not just stay in Italy.

  3. Blockhaus Corno alle Scale Pila… man these names sound made up, I can’t keep track. It says the break evaporated because nobody could hold Team Visma-Lease a Bike’s wheel, which sounds like some team tactic thing. Meanwhile that guy who wore pink for nine stages just cracked? idk maybe he ate the wrong pasta or something on the final climb.
