Stokes retires mid-match as England chase collapses

Stokes retires – In a day that will be remembered at Trent Bridge, England captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from national-team duty before tea, took a wicket with his first ball after the announcement, and was later dismissed for a 20-ball 30. New Zealand closed Day
NOTTINGHAM, England — About 15 minutes before tea, with New Zealand in full control of the deciding Test at Trent Bridge, Ben Stokes stood at the center of a storm he may not have meant to create.
England captain and all-rounder Stokes had already told his teammates at the start of the day’s play, then the announcement landed publicly through an England statement: he would be retiring from national-team duty at the end of the match in Nottingham.
For a sport built on long plans and even longer careers, it was the timing that hit first. The pitch beneath their feet had started to deteriorate. New Zealand’s players left the field on the cusp of delivering one of the country’s great Test series victories. and England’s position was stark. England reached stumps on 103-4 after 15 overs, needing 270 runs in a seemingly forlorn chase of 373 to win.
Stokes, recalled after missing the second Test for disciplinary reasons, responded almost immediately. With his first ball after the announcement filtered out, he sent down a delivery that was edged by New Zealand batter Zak Foulkes to second slip, where the catch was taken by Harry Brook.
It was a symbolic moment. the kind that feels designed for the highlights—except the wicket didn’t change the larger picture. Stokes led England back to the dressing room at the end of the session to a standing ovation from fans. About an hour later. after New Zealand declared on 288-9 and Daryl Mitchell was unbeaten on 100. the outgoing captain walked out at the start of the chase. this time with Ben Duckett after promoting himself to open.
He went hard from the first delivery. In what came across as pure instinct, Stokes slog-swept, scooped and drove his way through a brief, furious innings. In 37 minutes, he struck two sixes and two fours in a blur of batting that ended at 50-0, as Stokes flayed Foulkes to Mitchell at mid-on.
Another standing ovation followed. The ride, though, was over.
Four more batters were dismissed after Stokes’s exit, including Brook. Brook hit a six and a four off his first two balls before departing for 21.
New Zealand, meanwhile, moved toward a series-defining finish. Not since 1999 has New Zealand won a series in England of three Tests or more, but it is a huge favorite now to clinch a 2-1 win.
Joe Root was unbeaten on 9 and Emilio Gay was 6 not out when England closed Day 4.
For England, the day carried an extra weight beyond cricket itself. The English haven’t lost a home series of three Tests or more since 2012. If they do. pressure would likely mount on leadership after the humiliating 4-1 Ashes series defeat and ongoing concerns about professionalism. sharpened by the dropping of Stokes and Gus Atkinson for the second Test for disciplinary reasons.

Retire mid-match?? That’s wild, I’m confused how that’s even allowed.
So he retires and then immediately gets a wicket, right? But they still can’t win… cricket is just chaos honestly.
I thought the whole point was he was retiring “at the end of the match,” not like right then. Also why was the pitch breaking down so fast? Kinda feels like a conspiracy or something.
Not gonna lie I only read the headline but I saw Stokes got 30 off like 20 balls?? That sounds like he gave up. Then again England needed 270 so… yeah idk.
