Mum screams after surprise baby name merges into slur

Selecting the perfect baby name isn’t something to be taken lightly. Some parents will have settled on a name months before their little one arrives, while for others, whittling down the options to just one choice proves challenging. It’s a significant decision that warrants careful consideration to ensure you make the right choice for your child. At the end of the day, whatever baby name you opt for is entirely your decision, and while others might not be keen on it, it’s not their right
to tell you you’ve made an error. Unless, naturally, you’ve somehow managed to settle on the “worst name ever” for your baby , which is what one new mum on social media appears to have done. The mum’s cousin posted on Reddit seeking advice after declaring that her relative had selected the “worst name ever” for her baby while attempting to do something heartfelt. She disclosed her cousin had planned to name her daughter after her grandparents, Harvey and Charlotte, by merging their names into
a single moniker. The mum kept the name under wraps from her family, wanting the sentimental gesture to be a surprise – but once she announced the name, she recognised the dreadful mistake she made. The cousin revealed: “So my 20-year-old cousin had a baby girl last month. She named her something so horrific I cannot even call the baby it. She combined two names and came up with. Harlotte. After her grandparents, Harvey and Charlotte. She didn’t tell anyone the name idea until after
she was named and [the] papers [were] signed.” Warning: The below Reddit post contains strong language. When the new mum announced the baby’s name to her family, her aunt — and the poster’s mother — questioned why she had chosen to name the child “w****”. It was at that point the mum realised by merging the two names, she had essentially named her daughter “harlot”, a derogatory term for a sex worker. She subsequently “started screaming” and dissolved into tears upon realising her blunder, having
had absolutely no idea how the name would sound until she broke the news to her family. The woman on Reddit went on to say: “This poor child. Harlotte. HARLOTTE. She came out very pink and has a piggy nose, so I’m calling her Piglet for now.” Those commenting on the post were left baffled by the name the mum had chosen, with many offering up alternative suggestions for combining the names Harvey and Charlotte. One person said: “They could’ve kept it super normal and
just gone with Charley!” While another added: “The cousin is a complete idiot. Have some sense.” And a third questioned: “Why do people, who have unlimited access to information at their fingertips, refuse to use it for a simple search before ruining a baby’s life?” If you’re considering giving your child an unconventional name, it’s important to ensure it complies with UK naming regulations. While there isn’t a definitive list of forbidden names in the UK, there are certain limitations you should be mindful of.
You cannot give your child: Offensive or obscene names Names containing numbers or symbols, such as James2 or @Victoria Names that are misleading, such as title-based names like Queen or Lord Names that are impossible to pronounce According to the UK Deed Poll Office , names that are racist or deemed to be detrimental to the child could be illegal and prohibited in certain parts of the UK.
