When “Grey’s Anatomy” fans finally settle into the idea that the show is easing into the past, ABC pulls the franchise back into motion—this time with a new home far from Seattle.

On Tuesday. May 19. ABC confirmed it has ordered a new spinoff series set in West Texas. with a premiere date “in the middle of 2027.” The network’s medical drama universe is expanding again. and this expansion comes with a specific promise: a rural setting where patients have a final shot at care before the distance becomes its own kind of barrier.

The one-hour series will take place in West Texas and center on a rural medical center that offers patients a last chance for care before “miles of nowhere,” according to ABC.

Shonda Rhimes and executive producer Meg Marinis are both set to write the show. Ellen Pompeo, who is also part of the franchise’s core, will return as an executive producer.

Marinis. in a statement. said: “This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart. emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades – all set in my home state of Texas. ” and added. “I am so grateful to Shonda Rhimes for creating this dynamic world and feel so fortunate that I get to be a part of it.”.

ABC has not said whether the new spinoff will include any current or former Grey’s Anatomy actors, or whether it will feature an all-new cast.

The Texas spinoff will be the fourth new show in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise. and the third spinoff series to air since the original launched in 2005. Toward the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 3, ABC developed its first spinoff, “Private Practice,” using a backdoor pilot episode. That series premiered in 2007 and followed Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) after she left Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital following her divorce from Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). Addison then worked in a private medical firm in Los Angeles with some former friends.

Private Practice aired for six seasons until 2013, and it included multiple crossovers with Grey’s. Among those crossovers was the introduction of Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorscone): she guest-starred on Grey’s in Seasons 7 and 8 before becoming a series regular in Season 11 and remaining a staple character ever since.

Next came “Station 19,” which ran for seven seasons from 2018 to 2024. The spinoff followed a firefighter team in Seattle that regularly crossed paths with the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital surgeons. Much of the series largely followed Ben Warren (Jason George). who is married to Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). and when Station 19 ended. he returned to being a series regular on Grey’s.

The latest franchise move lands as Grey’s Anatomy itself is still processing its own turning points. Season 22 concluded on May 7 and sent off two major characters—Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver)—who decided to pursue a life in Paris together.

That season also included a more unresolved punch: Dr. Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) was fired, leaving viewers wondering whether they will see him again.

And as the network lays groundwork for a brand-new chapter across the country, the franchise’s leadership appears to be betting that the same emotional language fans recognize in Seattle can survive—and even deepen—when the setting becomes “miles of nowhere.”

  1. Mid-2027 is sooo far out lol. I hope they don’t mess it up like the last few seasons where everyone’s dying every other episode.

  2. Wait so Ellen Pompeo is coming back as like… a doctor in West Texas? I thought she was done-done. Also “last chance for care” sounds like they’re gonna do a bunch of sad hospital commercials.

  3. Man I can’t believe they’re still making Grey’s stuff. Didn’t Shonda Rhimes leave already? And if it’s rural, are they gonna have a “miles of nowhere” hospital where only rich people get service? idk
