Google pushes Gemini for Home hardware partners hard

Google’s push for Gemini in everyday living rooms is shifting into overdrive.

The company says Gemini for Home is now a “full-stack AI” offering, blending Google Home APIs with Gemini’s capabilities. Instead of leaving device makers to build AI-enabled hardware the hard way. Google is expanding its Google Home Gemini built-in program and positioning it as a shortcut—one designed to help partners “skip the multi-year research and development phase” usually required for hardware that runs on AI.

For the hardware side. Google is giving companies access to “fully validated scalablereference designs. ” including system-on-chips. sensors. and mics that have been built by its partners. The idea is simple: companies can use those designs to create. mass produce. and release devices such as cameras and speakers that respond to Gemini controls.

Google is also reaching beyond device manufacturers. It’s encouraging carriers. ISPs. and security firms that want to use its reference designs to integrate Google Home Premium with the devices they make. The subscription is pitched as the layer that brings added intelligence to the home—featuring tools like Home Brief. which summarizes home activity while people are away. and advanced deterrents. which use automations to create simulated presence in empty homes.

Google Home Premium has changed names before. The company says it used to be known as Nest Aware. Pricing is set with a “standard” tier at at least $10 a month or $100 a year, and an “advanced” option at double that—meaning at least $20 a month or $200 a year.

If users already pay for Google’s $20 monthly AI Pro subscription, Google says that includes standard access. For those on the $250-per-month Ultra subscription, Google says they get the advanced tier.

This expanded program doesn’t arrive out of nowhere. Google has been rolling Gemini into its products for a while. and it redesigned its Home app with an AI-first focus before releasing it globally last year. In the updated Home app, there’s an “Ask Home” button users can tap to ask Gemini. If someone would rather use Google Assistant instead. Google says the button will prompt them to sign up for the AI experience.

Not everyone wants Gemini running everything in their home. For users who prefer to keep their automation setup separate. the company’s ecosystem still leaves room for alternatives: Home Assistant or Apple HomeKit can be used for automation needs. and Google apps can be “de-Gemini[ed]” with help from instructions shared alongside the announcement.

  1. I don’t get it… is Gemini for Home like the Nest Aware thing or is it something else? They keep renaming it and then the price goes up. $10 a month?? Might as well buy my own hardware.

  2. “Simulated presence” sounds like they’re basically offering burglar insurance for people who don’t know how to lock doors. Also carriers/ISPs getting involved feels shady like they’ll bundle it with my internet whether I want it or not.

  3. Wait so if you already pay for the $20 AI Pro, you get the advanced tier? That part sounds good but I bet it’s still limited or you have to change settings. And if my Home app has an “Ask Home” button then that means Assistant is gonna get replaced, right? I just wanted smart speakers, not another AI subscription treadmill.
