Misryoum reports that SFFILM announced the 2026 Golden Gate Awards winners across feature, documentary, mid-length, and short categories.. The festival ran from April 24 to May 4 across the Bay Area. including a stop at the revived Castro. and it wrapped with an “Empire Strikes Back” screening timed for Star Wars Day.
This year’s lineup leaned into bold storytelling and fresh voices, from surreal coming-of-age drama to intimate documentary portraits, showing how quickly independent cinema is finding new ways to connect with audiences.
Among the feature prizes, Rafael Manuel’s “Filipiñana” took home the New Directors Award.. The film. which debuted at Sundance earlier in the year. arrives in August from Kino Lorber. and its recognition came alongside an additional honorable mention for the director’s work. with Walter Thompson-Hernández’s “If I Go Will They Miss Me” also recognized in the New Directors category.
Shortly after. the Kirby Walker Documentary Award went to Carolina González Valencia’s “How to Clean a House in 10 Easy Steps.” Misryoum also notes an honorable mention in that documentary category for Anna Fitch and Banker White’s “Yo (Love Is a Rebellious Bird). ” a film celebrated for its inventive approach to memory and friendship.
Meanwhile, the short-film awards spotlighted variety and craft. Don Hertzfeldt’s “Paper Trail” earned the Animation prize, while audience honors went to Ramzi Bashour’s “Hot Water” and Javid Soriano’s “Figaro Up, Figaro Down.”
The mid-length category brought its own momentum: Alison Klayman’s “Scenes from the Divide” won the Mid-Length Film Award.. Other genre and spotlight sections included “Salvation” winning the Global Visions Award. along with additional distinctions across Cine Latino Spotlight. Family Films. and Youth Works.
