Oregon football makes miserable history Dan Lanning will hate after slow start vs. Oklahoma State

Oregon football came into the season as one of the favorites to make it back to the CFP and potentially win the national championship, but the Ducks didn’t get off to the best start in Week 1. A sloppy performance from the offense and a discouraging one from the defense was just enough to avoid an upset in a 34-27 win over Boise State in Eugene.

Week 2 seemed like the perfect spot for Dan Lanning and company to bounce back and make a statement, as they  traveled up to Stillwater to play an Oklahoma State team that lost to Tulsa by two touchdowns in Week 1. Right?

Wrong.

After a brief weather delay, the Ducks were caught sleepwalking out of the gate and trailed the Cowboys 17-7 early in the first half. By falling into that deficit, the Ducks made a bit of history.

Oregon is the only team since 2014 to trail two consecutive games by double digits at any point after entering the game as a 24+-point favorite, per 247 Sports.

Oregon had no answers for Drew Mestemaker and the Oklahoma State offense in the first half, as they trailed 24-17 going into halftime. Dante Moore and the offense were even worse, barely eclipsing 100 yards of offense before the break. Both of the Ducks’ first-half touchdowns were set up by tipped-ball interceptions.

So far in the second half, the Ducks have finally started to find a rhythm on both sides of the ball. Moore found star receiver Dakorien Moore for a 36-yard touchdown before the defense forced its first 3-and-out of the day, so maybe Lanning and company are starting to settle in like they did a week ago.

If Oregon finds its top level, it’s very likely that Oklahoma State will not be able to match it and the Ducks will run away with the victory. However, after a choppy start to the season and to Saturday’s game in Stillwater, Oregon finds itself in another unexpected dogfight as the college football world watches and waits for a potential upset.
