GNAT demands justice after military raid at Adiewoso

The Ghana National Association of Teachers is calling for accountability after three educators were assaulted during a military operation in Adiewoso.
Three teachers are among several people injured after soldiers reportedly carried out an early morning operation at Adiewoso, a community in the Tarkwa Nsuaem area of Western Region.. Residents say the soldiers, believed to be from the Ghana Army base in Takoradi, entered the town in the early hours of Thursday, 30th April, and assaulted male inhabitants.. Victims are said to have suffered both physical injuries and psychological trauma.. According to the headteacher of a
local school, the incident followed an earlier confrontation between soldiers and illegal miners, known locally as galamsey operators.. The miners had allegedly been working on land said to belong to Ghana Rubber Estate Limited.. The headteacher said the soldiers initially left after that encounter but returned later and targeted male residents during the raid.. He said three teachers, including himself, and the husband of a female teacher were among those severely beaten.. He added that
the teachers tried to explain to the soldiers that they were neither residents involved in illegal mining nor connected to the activities.. However, he said the soldiers insisted they should have done more to educate the miners about the destruction of the land.. All four victims sought medical treatment and have since been discharged.. Adiewoso is located in the Nsuaem area along the Agona Nkwanta to Axim road.. The Ghana National Association of Teachers has
condemned the incident and is calling for justice for the affected teachers.
