It may still be early, but the returns are promising for Gio Reyna at Strasbourg so far.
After an offseason move from Borussia Mönchengladbach, the American midfielder has taken up a key role in the Ligue 1 team.
Reyna had his best game yet on Sunday, Sept. 6, scoring his first Strasbourg goal and helping create another in a 6-2 win over Troyes.
After starting just five games for Gladbach all of last season, the 23-year-old has now started back-to-back matches for Strasbourg.
Reyna’s first Strasbourg goal came on a deflected left-footed effort from the top of the box, making the score 3-1 in the 57th minute.
After the game, Strasbourg coach Hugo Olivera said that Reyna was the “heart of the team” in his club’s 4-2-3-1 formation.
Reyna came off the bench in Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 opener, a 4-0 defeat to Marseille, before starting in a 2-1 win over Lens and Sunday’s victory at Troyes.
The 23-year-old appeared in all five games for the U.S. men’s national team at the World Cup this summer, starting once. He found the net with an outstanding outside-of-the-foot goal in the team’s opening win over Paraguay.
