Giants’ Willy Adames ‘ashamed’ after Dodgers shutout

Shohei Ohtani dominated as the Dodgers shut out the Giants 4-0, with a costly seventh-inning baserunning error from Willy Adames.
A crushing 4-0 shutout at Dodger Stadium quickly became a night the San Francisco Giants would rather forget, with Willy Adames calling himself “ashamed” after a seventh-inning baserunning mistake helped erase their best chance to score.
Shohei Ohtani was the defining force. finishing seven scoreless innings while striking out eight Giants and allowing only four hits and two walks.. His velocity stood out early. reaching 100.6 mph on a pitch to Bryce Eldridge in the first inning. and he backed it up with another dominant stretch that helped San Francisco manage only limited sustained threats.. On the season, Ohtani’s ERA dropped to 0.82, including a mark of 0.32 against the Giants.
The right-handed ace carried that advantage into a bigger historical edge as well: across five career starts versus San Francisco. Ohtani has allowed just one run while striking out 33 over 28 innings.. Against that backdrop. the Giants’ offense struggled to find rhythm from the outset. particularly once Los Angeles began turning early pressure into runs.
The Dodgers jumped ahead off Giants starter Robbie Ray, pushing runs early to build the game’s eventual comfort.. In the third inning, Santiago Espinal and Mookie Betts delivered back-to-back home runs, both coming on middle-middle four-seam fastballs.. Ray’s outing ended after 4⅔ innings. during which he surrendered four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks. and the damage carried into a difficult recent trend: his ERA against Los Angeles across his last three starts dating back to 2025 now stands at 7.45.
Still, the Giants’ toughest blow came later, when the game’s final shape was formed in the seventh.. With one out, Adames and Matt Chapman put together back-to-back singles, putting San Francisco in position to swing momentum.. Drew Gilbert then sent a deep fly ball to right-center. where Andy Pages tracked it down—but the inning would end in a costly way.
As the ball was caught. Adames. who had already gotten far off second base. was doubled off. ending the rally and effectively closing the door on San Francisco’s best opportunity to score.. After the loss. Adames did not shy away from responsibility. saying he lost track of the outs and also misread the play.
“It’s my fault,” Adames said, adding that the mistake was one he felt he “can’t happen in the game” and calling it the most ashamed he would feel while playing. He described it directly as a mistake on his read, leaving no ambiguity about where the breakdown occurred.
The Giants’ overall production reflected the difficulty of the night.. They were held without a hit with runners in scoring position in seven attempts. and that inability to cash in on high-leverage chances stood out as a major reason the shutout held.. They also saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Baserunning was already a storyline for San Francisco before this game, and the seventh-inning moment reinforced it.. The team entered Wednesday tied for last in MLB in FanGraphs’ baserunning metric and last in stolen bases. meaning the Dodgers’ 4-0 lead carried into a setting where any misstep was especially punishing.
Giants manager Tony Vitello acknowledged the play and discussed what he would address going forward.. He said he had not yet spoken with Adames at the time of his comments. while also stressing that the baserunning misread did not singlehandedly decide the outcome.. Even so, Vitello indicated that poor baserunning overall was something he plans to address.
With the series shifting to the next matchup, San Francisco will turn to Landen Roupp, who enters Thursday’s finale with a 5-3 record and a 3.09 ERA. Los Angeles will counter with Emmet Sheehan, listed at 2-1 with a 4.79 ERA.
For the Giants, Thursday’s game now carries an added urgency beyond the standings.. After a night where scoring chances evaporated and a critical baserunning lapse erased the seventh-inning swing. the focus will likely be on reclaiming clean. disciplined execution—especially when opportunities appear.. And for the Dodgers. the performance from Ohtani offered a reminder of how difficult it is to break through when a pitcher can suppress innings early and then let the offense build a cushion around him.
