Cuba Protests Ignite in Havana as Blackouts Deepen Under Trump Pressure

Cuba protests – Protests erupted in Havana as Cuba faces its worst blackouts in decades, with officials citing fuel shortages and escalating U.S. pressure.
Cuba’s streets in Havana lit up with unrest on Wednesday evening as the island nation confronts what it described as its worst blackouts in decades, while U.S. pressure continues to loom over its energy lifeline.
Protests broke out across the capital as the country’s power failures intensified, with residents voicing frustration over the lack of electricity. Videos shared on X showed police officers repelling protesters in the Playa neighborhood, where barricades were reportedly set up in the streets.
In other parts of Havana, crowds blocked roads with burning rubbish, and protesters could be heard calling for electricity. Among the chants reported were demands to “turn on the lights,” alongside a pledge that “the people, united, will never be defeated.”
The demonstrations come as Cuba’s blackouts have worsened sharply in recent months. with reports indicating the situation has escalated dramatically since January.. That timing coincides with President Donald Trump’s issuance of an executive order threatening tariffs on any country that exports oil or petroleum products to the United States.
Cuba’s government has framed the problem as an acute strain on its power infrastructure and fuel supplies. Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy said the country’s energy system is in a “critical state,” describing how the nation has run out of key fuels needed to keep electricity generation running.
According to state-run media coverage. the minister said Cuba had no crude oil or fuel oil available and that it also lacked diesel.. He described gas from Cuba’s own wells as the primary remaining source. saying domestic production had grown—an effort that still appears insufficient to prevent widespread outages.
The unrest also highlights the broader pressures Cuba faces as it tries to keep essential services operating amid mounting energy instability.. While the protests are rooted in immediate daily hardship. they unfold against a longer backdrop of strained economic conditions and U.S.. sanctions, which have intensified scrutiny on the island’s ability to secure fuel and energy inputs.
For many residents. the power cuts are more than an inconvenience; they shape safety. household routines. and public trust in the government’s capacity to manage crisis conditions.. The visible escalation—from road blockages to confrontations with police—suggests that the blackout crisis has moved from private frustration to public mobilization.
At the same time, the executive order tied to U.S.. policy underscores how international trade restrictions can ripple through domestic systems that rely on imported inputs.. Even as Cuba has pointed to limited remaining resources within its own production. the reports indicate that the overall fuel shortfall has reached a breaking point.
The situation remains fluid. with the protests occurring as authorities and officials attempt to respond to a rapidly deteriorating energy situation.. This is a breaking story. and more developments are expected to follow as Cuba weighs how to address both the immediate blackout crisis and the public anger now spilling onto the streets.

this is literally what happens when you run a communist country for 60 years lol
wait so Trump cut off their oil?? I thought this was about protests I didnt realize we were the ones causing the blackouts. thats kind of messed up honestly but also idk the whole story so
I watched a video on this last year and Cuba has been having blackouts way before Trump even got back in office so I dont know why the media keeps blaming him for everything that goes wrong in every single country on earth. Cuba has been falling apart since the Soviet Union left and nobody ever talks about that. My uncle actually visited Havana back in 2018 and said the infrastructure was already terrible. This isnt new its just suddenly news because they can use it against Trump.
I feel so bad for the regular people there just trying to live their lives and they got no electricity no food probably no nothing and then they go out to protest and the police is beating them back like what kind of government does that to its own people. I seen the videos on X and it looked really bad. Nobody deserves to live like that and I hope somebody in the world actually steps up and does something because clearly their own government doesnt care at all about them and hasnt for a long time. This is heartbreaking.
