Gemini adds Google Play app discovery and installation

A chat was never supposed to also be a shopping cart—until now.
Google is rolling out a new Google Play connected app for Gemini that brings app discovery and installation directly into the chatbot. With the integration. you can find apps. install them. and make in-app purchases from inside your Gemini conversation. turning “Can you help me find an app?” into “Go ahead and install it.”.
The rollout follows Google’s earlier announcement from May that it would bring Play Store integration to its chatbot. Now. the Play connection is arriving as a connected app for Gemini rather than a separate search routine—one more way Google is trying to make the app store feel less like a catalog and more like an assistant.
In practice. the feature works like this: you can ask Gemini to “find a productivity app to help me with meal planning.” Gemini responds with recommendations for apps you can install. When you tap an app icon. it takes you to the app’s details page on the Google Play Store so you can complete the installation. You can also use the chat to move toward purchases—for example. typing “show me in-app purchases for [App Name]” or “buy a Google Play gift card” to access digital buying options.
Before you try it, Google is clear about the requirements. Users need to be 18 or over. have the Google Play Store app on their Android phone. and be signed into Gemini with a personal Google Account. There’s also a privacy-related setting that must be enabled: “Keep activity” needs to be turned on in your Gemini settings.
Connecting the two doesn’t sound complicated. You open the Gemini app. make sure you’re signed into the same account you use for the Play Store. and ask Gemini to find an app from Google Play. If the Play connection isn’t already set up. Gemini should offer the option to connect—and you’ll follow the on-screen instructions to finish.
It’s a small shift in where tasks begin and end. Instead of bouncing between chat and store tabs, Gemini is aiming to bring more of the app journey into one place—discovery, installation, and purchases—while requiring the right account setup and activity settings to keep everything working.

So it’s like ordering apps straight from Gemini now? Honestly not sure why I need my chat bot to do what Play Store already does…
Wait I thought Google already did this with voice search or whatever. If you “keep activity” turned on, that feels creepy but I guess people will just click yes lol.
Yeah but why does it say 18+? Apps are for kids too like games and stuff. Sounds like they’re blocking minors from downloading stuff and calling it privacy, which is wild.
Not gonna lie, I don’t want Gemini to be my app shopping cart. Next thing you know it’s gonna suggest purchases based on what I googled in 2019. Also the article says “a A chat” part so I feel like it’s missing info…
