A quick turnaround brought Sammy Peralta back into Angels life on Saturday night.

The Los Angeles Angels signed the left-handed pitcher to a minor league contract after he became a free agent following his departure from the Colorado Rockies organization. Colorado had designated Peralta for assignment earlier this week. and after he cleared waivers. he declined an outright assignment to Triple-A. He didn’t wait long to find another path—returning to Los Angeles. an organization he had joined previously on a minor league deal in May 2025.

Peralta’s new opportunity in orange and blue carries the kind of urgency that comes when a roster decision forces a player to move fast. With Colorado, his time to make an impact was limited. The Rockies had claimed him off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in early April. promoted him to the major league roster multiple times. and still saw him appear in only two games.

In those outings, Peralta allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks across 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four of the 15 batters he faced. His first appearance with Colorado also came as his first major league start of his career—serving as an opener against the Texas Rangers before Tanner Gordon entered the game.

There’s a clear rhythm to Peralta’s recent major league stops. He has reached the majors in four consecutive seasons. making appearances with the Rockies. the Angels. and the Chicago White Sox. Over 48 1/3 career major league innings, he owns a 5.40 ERA, with a 17.9% strikeout rate, an 11.4% walk rate, and a 39.6% ground-ball rate.

His most recent run with Los Angeles. late in the 2025 season. produced a 7.59 ERA in 10 2/3 innings—numbers that help explain why this current contract is minor league rather than a direct lock-in to the big league roster. The Angels are essentially bringing him back to rebuild his footing and earn another shot.

Peralta’s pitching profile has always leaned on variety rather than overpowering speed. Despite below-average velocity, he typically throws in the 89-90 mph range with his four-seam fastball and sinker. After introducing the sinker in 2025, he increased its usage while continuing to feature a sweeper, slider, and changeup.

That mix has shaped his results in the minors too. At the Triple-A level. Peralta has posted a 4.79 ERA over 229 1/3 innings across parts of five seasons. with a 23.2% strikeout rate and a 7.1% walk rate. His command improved significantly after adopting the sinker. Last season at Salt Lake, he walked just 4.8% of opposing hitters in 70 2/3 innings. He followed that with a 5.7% walk rate and a 51.1% ground-ball rate in the minors this year.

For now. the focus is simple: Peralta is in Los Angeles again. under a minor league deal. after a DFA cleared from the Rockies and a Triple-A assignment that he chose to avoid. The next step is obvious—find consistent success in the minors and turn this second chance with the Angels into another climb back to the majors.

  1. I’m confused… DFA then he “cleared waivers” and still didn’t go to Triple-A? So basically he just got lucky and the Angels snatched him up. Baseball roster stuff is wild.

  2. Wait they said he only pitched 2 games for Colorado and gave up like 3 earned runs but they still bring him back? I mean if he’s lefty that’s probably why? Also I swear I saw his name in the White Sox thing too.

  3. So he got claimed from the Brewers, then DFA, then Angels again?? Sounds like one of those guys who’s just bouncing around because teams don’t want the contract. 5.40 ERA isn’t great, but 4 strikeouts in a few innings right? I don’t really get the opener part either, like who even decides that? Anyway go Angels I guess.
