For the first time ever, the NTT IndyCar Series will hold a race among Washington, D.C.’s famous monuments, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. But weather could impact the festivities.
This two-day free event could see scattered thunderstorms in the nation’s capital throughout the weekend.
Friday, Aug. 21 will see mostly cloudy but warm conditions with a slight chance of storms and temperatures ranging from a low of 69 degrees to a high of 81. However, both fans and drivers should prepare for a shift in the weather as the weekend progresses, with meteorologists warning of increased storm activity.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, all 27 IndyCars participating will take to the streets surrounding the National Mall for practice and qualifying sessions. These pre-race activities could see scattered thunderstorms, with temperatures forecast between 68 and 78 degrees.
Conditions are expected to improve on Sunday for the main event. Forecasts call for partly cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging from a low of 64 to a high of 84 degrees.
