France and Argentina lead as round of 16 nears

With the World Cup round of 32 still underway, early shocks have already sent Germany and the Netherlands out. France, Argentina, England, Spain and Brazil sit near the top as 25 teams fight for the remaining spots, including the United States, which hopes to

The World Cup round of 32 has barely had time to settle before the stakes started swinging fast. Pre-tournament contenders Germany and the Netherlands are already gone, and more teams are now pushing—game by game—toward the round of 16.

Host countries have been stealing headlines too. Canada and Mexico both won their round-of-32 matches, giving their fans something to cheer for right now. The U.S. will be watching its own moment on Wednesday, hoping to book its place among the last 16.

As the remaining matchups churn through the tournament, here’s where the 25 teams still standing stack up—based on what’s already happened and what each side appears to carry into the knockouts.

25. Bosnia & Herzegovina
Bosnia & Herzegovina did what they needed to do against Qatar, and now they play on. Their next test is the round of 32 match against the U.S., where they’ll go in as heavy underdogs.

24. Cape Verde
Cape Verde’s path has had drama baked into it. A late empty-net miss against Saudi Arabia may end up being the difference between leaving their first World Cup with a win. Still. the “Blue Sharks” found a way to keep rolling and make the knockout stage—one of the tournament’s best stories.

23. DR Congo
DR Congo looked shaky early—Uzbekistan led early—but the team with defensive solidity and weapons going forward eventually eased to a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan. That result carried them into the round of 32.

22. Ghana
Ghana’s chances hinge on staying locked into Carlos Queiroz’s approach: disciplined, low-event soccer. When they don’t stick firmly to it, they struggle to hang. Queiroz will have everyone in line as the knockout matches begin.

21. Austria
Austria went through a roller coaster with Algeria in one of the most shocking endings in international soccer history. Everything seemed headed toward a draw. Then Algeria scored. Austria answered seconds later after changes—sending Austria forward with everyone celebrating. while also setting up a round-of-32 game against Spain.

20. Algeria
Algeria already has a game that will live in fans’ memories. The match delivered a Riyad Mahrez double, plus the kind of late tension that matters most in knockout qualification. Algeria also avoided Spain in the round of 32 after conceding late.

19. Egypt
Egypt had the group win within reach, but it settled for a draw with Iran. The danger was there—Egypt nearly got burned by the style of “fire it was playing with.” Still, a matchup with Australia is the better-looking outcome for second-place finishers.

18. Australia
Australia’s run is a step forward for the Socceroos. They once again controlled a game, but this time they couldn’t find the back of the net. Even so, Tony Popovic will be shaping a plan for the knockouts.

17. Canada
Canada has already made this World Cup count. It advanced past South Africa for its first-ever knockout win. Now the challenge turns bigger: a round of 16 meeting with Morocco awaits.

16. Paraguay
Paraguay bounced back after opening with a 4-1 loss to the U.S. Gustavo Alfaro’s men pushed through the group stage, then stunned Germany to reach the round of 16.

15. Senegal
Senegal didn’t get off to a clean start, falling short in their first two games. After that, they did what they needed to do—thumping Iraq 5-0. The knockout stage offers room to make noise, but first Senegal has to fluster a strong Belgium attack.

14. Croatia
Croatia may have something opening up. It played an OK game against Ghana but then got what it wanted in a 2-1 win. Now another round-of-32 challenge comes fast, with Croatia facing Portugal. The concern for Croatia is clear: advanced age and lack of speed. The question is whether the opponent can punish those limitations.

13. Switzerland
Switzerland has been consistent, but it still hasn’t been fully tested—except for the Qatar match that came down to the last five minutes. Switzerland’s usual pattern is to advance and stay under the radar. Johan Manzambi could have a chance to feast against Algeria.

12. Colombia
Colombia couldn’t find the goal that truly set off the party against Portugal, but winning the group still matters. It puts Colombia on a path that could help it come together again for what could turn into another long knockout run.

11. Belgium
Belgium has a spark back in the mix. With Jeremy Doku back and veterans like Romelu Lukaku contributing goals, Belgium’s 5-1 win over New Zealand was enough to win over believers. That momentum carries into the knockout phase.

10. Norway
Norway made a decision to rest its best against France, and it paid off. A fresh Norwegian side beat Ivory Coast in the round of 32 and set up a matchup with Brazil.

9. Portugal
Portugal’s situation got harder after finishing runner-up in its group and failing to beat Colombia. Roberto Martinez’s team still has possibilities, even if the potential quarterfinal with Argentina is off the table.

8. United States
The U.S. couldn’t change its group fate in the finale against Turkey, because there was nothing at stake—but the late loss still couldn’t have felt good. The top players will be back as the knockouts begin.

7. Mexico
Javier Aguirre’s Mexico is clicking into gear at the right time. Mexico beat Ecuador in the round of 32 and will stay in Mexico City after securing the win.

6. Morocco
Morocco has shown again that it can threaten to go deep. The key marker was knocking off the Netherlands.

5. Brazil
Brazil got a major test from Japan in the round of 32, but it passed thanks to a late goal from Gabriel Martinelli.

4. Spain
Spain has notched a second consecutive win, but the performance hasn’t looked like the No. 1 pre-tournament team many expected. Still, Spain delivered a 1-0 win over Uruguay, and even injuries matter. Losing Nico Williams to another injury means more for Spain to figure out between phases.

3. England
After a frustrating draw to Ghana, England got the bounceback it needed. Harry Kane and the England team followed up with a controlled 2-0 win over Panama.

2. Argentina
Argentina’s group stage looked almost too clean. Even with Leo Messi getting his rest while still scoring in a second-half cameo, Argentina beat Jordan and closed out a perfect group stage. The Albiceleste’s path in later rounds looks more straightforward than many title rivals.

1. France
France currently looks hard to fault. Les Bleus made easy work of Sweden, and Kylian Mbappe scored his third brace in four games during the tournament.

The tournament picture is still shifting as the round of 32 plays out. but one reality is already clear: momentum. timing. and a few late swings are separating the teams that are cruising from the teams scrambling. With the round of 16 approaching—and the U.S. waiting for Wednesday—every game now feels like it’s closing doors and opening others at the same time.

  1. Not surprised Germany got knocked out, they always mess up when it matters. Also Canada and Mexico winning?? That’s wild, I feel like I missed a whole day of games.

  2. U.S. play Wednesday to get to last 16, right? I saw somewhere they’re basically guaranteed if they don’t tie which… makes no sense because ties happen. But anyway go USA, hope France doesn’t just steamroll everyone like the headline says.

  3. France and Argentina leading sounds like the same thing every cup… like the big teams always end up in the top spots. Also why is it talking about host countries Canada and Mexico like that’s a big advantage? I swear World Cup round-of-32 is always chaos and then they act like it was planned.
