On Thursday, June 11, the University of Florida announced a projected $1.45 billion investment to renovate Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, describing the plan as the most expensive renovation in college sports history. The announcement came in a message from Board of Trustees Chairman Mori Hosseini.
UF’s project website spells out what the school is aiming to change about game day. Fans, it says, should experience a more comfortable, convenient, and enjoyable experience from arrival through departure. Improvements are expected to include more accessible concessions. improved restroom access. enhanced wayfinding. better traffic flow throughout the stadium. upgraded technology. and additional gathering spaces.
The spending also lands in the context of a major stadium arms race in college football. Northwestern is currently building a $862 million stadium for its football program, while Penn State is renovating its stadium for $700 million.
Florida’s escalation has been years in the making. An initial proposal in 2018 listed the project at $400 million. Rising costs pushed the number higher, and Florida’s work to maintain the stadium’s historical aspects helped lift the total price.
The financing plan reflects a mix of strategies rather than a single funding source. UF says the project will be funded through private giving, capital reserves, projected-generated revenues, and financing mechanisms, including long-term debt through approval of the Florida Board of Governors.
Timing is now the focus for when the transformation moves from planning to impact. Construction is set to begin after the 2026 season and be finished prior to the 2030 offseason.
