Report Says Baldur’s Gate 2 Remake Is Under Development

A new report claims a remake of Baldur’s Gate 2 is in development, with former BioWare co-lead designer Kevin Martens reportedly back on the project—raising fresh questions about whether Wizards of the Coast is preparing to revisit both original Baldur’s Gate

A remake would be the clearest answer yet to one lingering question for Baldur’s Gate fans: what comes next when Larian Studios has moved on?. Even as Baldur’s Gate 3 became a gateway for “millions of players” into the Forgotten Realms. Wizards of the Coast has kept the IP expanding across TV. publishing. and now—if the latest report holds—another major game return.

Earlier this year, HBO was announced as developing a live-action television adaptation continuing the story of Baldur’s Gate 3. At the same time. Penguin Random House has begun expanding the setting through a new line of books. including an upcoming story centered on fan-favorite companion Astarion. Taken together, those moves suggest Wizards sees Baldur’s Gate as more than a successful video game series.

The report now points to a game project that would go straight for one of the series’ most beloved entries. It claims a remake of Baldur’s Gate 2 is currently in development. and says former BioWare developer Kevin Martens has returned to work on the project. Martens previously served as a co-lead designer on Baldur’s Gate 2. before going on to work on titles including Jade Empire. Neverwinter Nights. Mass Effect. and Diablo 3.

The same report also suggests that remake treatments could extend beyond Baldur’s Gate 2. While the focus is specifically on that title. it cites the possibility that both of BioWare’s original Baldur’s Gate games may be receiving remakes. That idea tracks with the series’ own structure: Baldur’s Gate 2 directly continues the story of the original game.

All of this lands in a moment when fans have been waiting for the next major project for years. Baldur’s Gate 3 introduced players to the world and its characters. but with Larian no longer involved. a direct sequel may still be the obvious path—while a new Baldur’s Gate game without Larian would be a massive undertaking. The report’s timing. paired with Wizards’ broader push across HBO and Penguin Random House. makes the idea of revisiting classic adventures feel less like a random rumor and more like the next step in a wider plan.

For now, it’s a developing story, and the details—especially what’s actually planned for the wider lineup of remakes—remain unsettled. But if Kevin Martens’ return is real and Baldur’s Gate 2 is truly in development, the “unanswered question” for the series may finally be getting a concrete shape.

  1. I read this and thought it said Baldur’s Gate 2 is coming to TV first?? So is it a game or HBO thing. Companies can never be clear.

  2. Kevin Martens coming back makes me think it’ll be like Mass Effect controls or something. Not mad, but I feel like WotC just wants Diablo vibes and will change everything anyway. Also wasn’t Jade Empire the one with the weird combat? anyway.

  3. If they remake BG2 AND the first one, that’s just milking it. Larian leaving isn’t the same as “the story continues,” it’s gonna feel different. I saw Astarion books coming out too so now it’s like they’re trying to sell the IP nonstop. But maybe that’s good? Idk, I’m skeptical when it’s called “under development” like that’s not already obvious.
