FIFA cancels free World Cup tickets after checkout error

FIFA cancels – FIFA has canceled World Cup tickets issued at 0 USD to about 60 fans after a website checkout error allocated tickets for free, with the affected fans being invited to complete payment of the correct amount. The incident adds to scrutiny of FIFA’s ticketing sy
In the middle of the World Cup ticket rush, FIFA moved to unwind a mistake that sent about 60 fans tickets at no charge.
The governing body said the tickets were “allocated at no charge (0 USD) due to a prior payment issue during the checkout process.” FIFA canceled those World Cup tickets. and told the affected fans that the tickets they requested would remain reserved while they were invited to complete payment of the correct amount.
FIFA said it “regrets the error and any inconvenience caused,” adding that the situation has been corrected through cancellation of the free allocations.
For fans watching FIFA’s ticketing system closely, the glitch lands amid a broader fight over how the tournament is priced and sold. Attorneys general of New York and New Jersey are investigating FIFA’s World Cup ticketing program for possible violations of consumer protection laws.
The mispriced tickets were sold through the official World Cup site on May 21, FIFA said in an email message to buyers. That was more than three months after FIFA president Gianni Infantino said all 104 World Cup games had sold out.
Even as FIFA canceled the tickets issued at 0 USD, sales are still ongoing for the tournament that opens next Thursday in Mexico City. FIFA is also using a surge pricing model that has been controversial with fans, and it remains unclear whether seats for games in less demand will drop in price.
FIFA is not relying only on direct sales. The organization is also running its own resale platform. charging 15% commission from both buyers and sellers as a way to cut out ticket dealers. Yet for many games on Friday, third-party sales platforms such as Seat Geek were still offering widespread availability.
The stakes around ticketing have been especially high this cycle. Tickets for the 2026 World Cup are widely more expensive than any previous edition, a move FIFA has justified by saying it will help earn billions of dollars for member federations to develop the sport globally.
FIFA has also taken control of pricing and ticket sales as part of bringing World Cup operations in-house. At earlier editions, the long-time model involved working with host nations’ local organizing committees.
When the United States. Canada and Mexico won hosting rights in 2018. they promised to sell hundreds of thousands of tickets at $21 each for group-stage games. Now. as FIFA continues to sell into an opening week in Mexico City. the canceled “0 USD” tickets stand as another sharp reminder of how quickly a ticketing system can swing between official certainty and sudden disruption.

So FIFA basically stole free tickets then refunded themselves? lol
I don’t get how you can have a checkout error that gives 60 people tickets for $0 and then just cancel them. Like if it was “reserved” why not let them keep it? Sounds shady.
Wait so these were free because of a payment issue but they’re still invited to pay the “correct amount”… doesn’t that mean the website already let it go through? If they did it right the first time it wouldn’t matter.
This surge pricing stuff is why they can’t trust anything. If they’re checking “0 USD” charges for 60 people, imagine how many other glitches happened when they said everything sold out. Also the ticket rush and Mexico City opening next Thursday… I feel like they’re just trying to cover their tracks before lawyers show up.
