Tottenham clear the decks as Robertson joins Robertson free

Andy Robertson has joined Tottenham as a free agent on July 1 after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract, with Roberto De Zerbi giving the green light as Spurs try to move on from their relegation scare. Spurs are also preparing for further recruitment
Andy Robertson knew the moment mattered. In the video he shared for Tottenham fans, he spoke not like a player arriving late to the party, but like someone stepping into a new chapter on purpose—preparing for the World Cup in America while he counts down to his first match in Tottenham’s stadium.
Robertson’s move has now been confirmed as a free transfer to Tottenham. with Roberto De Zerbi approving the deal for the July 1 arrival. Tottenham survived in the Premier League “by the skin of their teeth” after a relegation scare. and Robertson is the first arrival as the club clear the decks for what is described as a fresh start.
This is also a homecoming of sorts for the Scotland captain. Tottenham were close to signing him in January. but Liverpool couldn’t bring back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma and the switch was pulled. The path is different this time: De Zerbi has now backed Robertson’s change after Robertson decided to leave Anfield at the expiration of his Liverpool contract this month. ending a spell that brought 378 appearances for the club.
In his Spurs message. Robertson began by telling supporters: “Hi Tottenham fans. it’s me Andy Robertson here. as you can see I’m not in Glasgow. I’m in America just now preparing for the World Cup.” He added that he can’t wait “to play for you guys. ” to meet them. and to experience the stadium “for the first time in front of you.”.
De Zerbi’s tone matched the sense of intent behind the signing. He said: “Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities. experience. leadership and mentality to our team.” He added: “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us. both on and off the pitch.” De Zerbi continued: “I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”.
Robertson is expected to be followed soon. Another free agent—Marcos Senesi—is expected to join Tottenham as another free transfer after the expiry of his Bournemouth contract. Spurs are also making a play for Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke.
Van Hecke. a 25-year-old Netherlands international. is valued by Brighton at close to £70million. but he only has one year left on his contract. The relationship between coach and player is part of the attraction: van Hecke is well-known to De Zerbi after playing under the Tottenham coach during his time in charge of Brighton.
Still, Tottenham need to move closer to Brighton’s valuation. The expectation is that the club will make a second bid for van Hecke after an opening offer was rejected. Chelsea are also reported to hold an interest. but the specific De Zerbi connection is positioned as something that could draw the defender toward a move.
With recruitment focused around the spine of the team, Tottenham’s planning is also shaped by possible departures. There is an expectation that Cristian Romero will leave this summer, and the club are clearly targeting reinforcements at centre-back.
All of it points to a summer Spurs see as urgent, not optional. Last season’s fight for survival ended with West Ham going down on the final day when Tottenham managed to beat Everton. ensuring their status as a Premier League club for next season. Now. Tottenham’s approach looks designed to prevent another scramble—starting with Robertson as the first confirmed piece of the rebuild. and continuing with Senesi and van Hecke as targets on the move.

Wait so he just… joined Spurs for free? Lol football is wild.
I don’t even follow Tottenham like that but “clear the decks” sounds like panic mode after almost getting relegated. Robertson leaving Liverpool for free transfer is kind of crazy though, I thought Liverpool would’ve kept him.
So De Zerbi “gave the green light” which means he’s the one who picked him right? Or is De Zerbi just like approval like paperwork lol. Also World Cup in America already? I swear that was supposed to be 2022. Spurs better not waste this man.
Robertson in America prepping for the World Cup but he’s also counting down to his first match at Tottenham’s stadium… ok but how does that help Spurs right now if the season starts already? I saw “by the skin of their teeth” and immediately thought refs screwed them or something. And the Kostas Tsimikas part is random to me, like why mention Roma??
