Eriksen expected to leave hospital after Ukraine scare

Eriksen expected – Christian Eriksen is “in good spirits” and expected to be discharged soon after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense, Denmark, on Sunday. The national team physician says he is with his family, and the team remains in regular contact

When Christian Eriksen clutched his chest with both hands and dropped to the ground in the 65th minute of Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense. Denmark. on Sunday. the match stopped immediately—and so did the usual rhythm of a football day. The game was abandoned after the referee conferred with staff and players from both teams.

On Monday morning, Denmark’s national-team physician delivered a calmer update. Morten Boesen said he spoke with Eriksen earlier that day, and that the 34-year-old midfielder is doing well.

“He is with his family and is in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home,” Boesen said in a statement carried by the Danish soccer federation.

Denmark had confirmed after the match that Eriksen walked off the field by himself after being attended by medical staff. and that he underwent more tests at Odense University Hospital. Boesen added that the federation is “taking good care of the players and staff and remain in regular contact with them. ” placing the focus on recovery after a moment that shook everyone in the stadium.

The emotional response reached beyond football. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen posted on Facebook late Sunday. saying she was “sending my warmest thoughts to Christian Eriksen and to all those around him who are affected. ” and adding that she had been relieved to hear an update on his condition after the initial shock of his latest health incident.

Eriksen’s health history is well known, but every new incident lands with the same weight. He was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator in the months after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening group game in the European Championship in 2021. He returned to playing less than a year later. but had to leave Italy. where he had been with Inter Milan — Italian health regulations prohibited players from playing with the implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

Since then, his career has continued across countries. Eriksen first returned to action in England with Brentford, then spent three years at Manchester United after that. He left as a free agent last year. and his current team is Wolfsburg in Germany. where he has a contract through the 2026-27 season. The club wished him a swift recovery on Sunday.

The friendly itself, however, sits now under a different kind of spotlight: Denmark did not qualify for the 2026 World Cup beginning this week in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Yet on Sunday night, the result stopped mattering as soon as Eriksen went down.

By Monday, the federation’s message was clear—Eriksen is expected to leave hospital soon, and he is in good spirits with his family. For a player who has already battled serious heart complications once before, the next steps are now about time, care, and getting home safely.

  1. I feel like they always say “in good spirits” then it turns into something bigger later. But I guess they wouldn’t lie? Still, collapsing on the field like that should be instantly life-threatening.

  2. Wait didn’t this happen before? Like with that other injury thing and people said it was the new heart meds or whatever. I swear every time I hear his name it’s always a medical scare, not football.

  3. The match stopped immediately but the game abandoned… so did they just all stand around while he’s getting tests? I’m glad he’s with his family though. Also the PM posting on Facebook doesn’t surprise me, Denmark is probably super on top of sports health. I just hope they find out what caused it this time.
