The Mercedes driver has been handed a drive-through penalty for failing to serve his initial five-second time penalty. The first punishment came after he was penalised for speeding in the pit lane. When he returned for a second stop under safety car conditions. his pit crew touched his W17 immediately—without serving the five-second penalty Russell was required to serve.
That mistake has now snowballed into a second, more serious consequence. Russell must serve the original sanction correctly and come back into the pit lane to serve the drive-through penalty.
He had been asked to stay out. But in the confusion created by the safety car, Russell peeled into the pit lane anyway—triggering the series of unfortunate events that brought the drive-through sanction.
