England missed Rio Ngumoha in dour Panama draw

England’s goalless first half against Panama in their World Cup group finale again left a question hanging: what if Rio Ngumoha had been picked? Liverpool’s teenager impressed earlier in the tournament build-up, but he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s initial 5

The quiet tension of England’s World Cup day wasn’t just in the scoreboard. It was in the feeling that the team had enough structure to get by, but not enough bite to break opponents open—especially when the moment demanded a spark.

Against Panama. England frustrated themselves as the match slid through a dour first half with no goals to show for it. They were already set for the knockout stages after earlier results. including a 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening game. and a goalless draw with Ghana after being held in another contest that never quite found its rhythm. Still, the group finale left a familiar pressure: when the finishing needed to arrive, it didn’t.

That’s where the name Rio Ngumoha has begun resurfacing—because the Liverpool teenager represents exactly what England didn’t manage in that game.

England boss Thomas Tuchel has been told he could have had a “game-changing” player on his hands if he had selected Ngumoha for the tournament. Ngumoha was called up to England’s squad for its training camp ahead of the World Cup and impressed as he made his debut against New Zealand. He won player of the match in that game, and later scored in a behind-closed-doors game against Miami FC.

But Ngumoha wasn’t included in Tuchel’s initial 55-man squad. which meant he was ineligible for a late call-up once the tournament began. With England struggling to get consistently dangerous in front of goal—something they also showed in their goalless draw against Ghana—his omission has turned from a selection decision into a lingering regret for fans watching closely.

Former Liverpool star Vladimir Smicer believes Ngumoha could have made a difference if Tuchel had taken the gamble.

“Rio Ngumoha looks very good,” Smicer told Casinostugan. “I saw the highlights of the game and that’s how he played for us this season. He had great moments.

“Of course sometimes it was difficult when he started, as he’s still young and needs to learn, but sometimes as a sub for England at the World Cup he could change the game.

“If you look at the England line-up, the strikers they have for the World Cup have more experience in the Premier League and for the national team. So that’s why it was a tough decision. But I like the idea that they are preparing with the squad and taking this pre-season before the World Cup.

“They are able to train with young players like Rio. It’s a good experience and he’s still young.

“He will play in future World Cups, don’t worry. If he improves his career as he is at the moment, he won’t miss the next World Cup if things go right.”

Those comments land at a point when England’s group-stage performances have already forced people to look beyond results and into what’s missing in games. In England’s case. it’s been the same theme: sharpness in the final third has too often been out of reach. even when opponents have been beatable on paper.

Ngumoha’s omission also sits beside Liverpool’s wider confidence in his development. The Reds have set him up for a bigger role next season after what has been a breakthrough campaign: Ngumoha has made 29 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions.

Liverpool are also working the market. While Victor Munoz has been signed as Andoni Iraola’s first transfer. and the pursuit of Yan Diomande continues. Ngumoha is set to get more chances. Still, the interest in him isn’t limited to Liverpool’s plans. Other teams have begun paying close attention to his progress.

That attention has already reached Germany. Bayern Munich approached Liverpool earlier this month in a move that left the club “baffled”. Liverpool are not putting Ngumoha up for sale under any circumstances, despite suggestions that his brother held talks with the German giants.

Back in England’s World Cup campaign. the facts are straightforward: after beating Croatia 4-2. England were held to a dour goalless draw by Ghana. and they entered their final group game against Panama already guaranteed a place in the knockout stages. Yet against Panama. they still went goalless at half-time—an outcome that makes Smicer’s point feel less like nostalgia and more like a match-day what-if.

England moved through their group with qualification in their pocket. but the broader story of the tournament build-up keeps circling one name. For now. Ngumoha will keep waiting for the next chance—while those watching England’s attack in Panama wonder whether the tournament could have looked different with a young Liverpool forward introduced at the right moment.

  1. I didn’t even finish reading but sounds like Tuchel messed up. If he was good enough for New Zealand why not Panama??

  2. Wait so he was “ineligible” because he wasn’t on the 55-man squad? That part seems crazy like they couldn’t just swap him in. But also England didn’t score vs Ghana either so maybe it’s more than one player… idk.

  3. This is why managers pick favorites. Like he scored vs Miami FC so obviously he’d solve everything. Then again England drew Ghana 0-0 too so maybe they were cursed or something. England always talks about structure but never the final ball, like they’re scared to shoot. So yeah bring on Ngumoha next time, I guess.
