Islanders secure signing rights for Ryan Healey

The New York Islanders acquired Ryan Healey’s NHL signing rights from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations, giving them until Aug. 15 to sign the 22-year-old defenseman to an entry-level contract.
For the New York Islanders, this one starts with a deadline.
Saturday’s move put Ryan Healey’s NHL signing rights into their hands, after they acquired them from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for future considerations. Healey is 22 years old, and the path from college to the pros now hinges on what the Islanders decide before Aug. 15.
Healey was originally selected by Minnesota in the fourth round, 121st overall, of the 2022 NHL Draft. A right-shot defenseman from Chicago, Illinois, he has just completed a four-year collegiate career at Harvard University and is now eligible to begin his professional career.
Across the 2025-26 season, Healey appeared in 34 games for Harvard and produced four goals and eight assists for 12 points. Defensively and overall production. he finished second among Harvard defensemen in scoring. while also recording a plus-one rating—his first positive plus-minus season during his NCAA career.
His wider Harvard resume spans 130 career games, with 19 goals and 36 assists for 55 points. The best offensive stretch came in 2023-24, when he totaled 22 points in 29 games. That same season. Healey earned NCAA All-Ivy League First Team honors. following an earlier nod as a freshman to the ECAC All-Rookie Team.
Before Harvard, Healey played in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux Falls Stampede. In his draft season, he collected 21 points in 59 games after spending the previous year competing across five different levels. He also represented the United States at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, recording two assists in four games.
With the signing rights secured, New York now controls the decision process—yet the clock is explicit. Healey must be signed to an entry-level contract by Aug. 15. If no agreement is reached by that deadline, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
There’s also a clear football-field advantage built into the timing. Acquiring Healey before that date gives the Islanders an opportunity to evaluate him at development camp before making a contract decision. If he signs. he is expected to begin his professional career next season with AHL Hamilton. adding organizational depth on the blue line.
For Hamilton Hammers supporters, this is also a depth move, with Healey positioned to bring a next-step transition after his Harvard production and recognition.
The sequence is straightforward: the Islanders buy time through the rights acquisition, then decide on a contract by Aug. 15—after which Healey’s future either locks in with New York or opens up to the rest of the league.

So they “secure signing rights” like that means he’s basically already signed right?
Aug 15 deadline?? That’s so specific lol. Idk why but this feels like the Islanders are trying to beat another team to him.
Harvard guy, defenseman, plus-one etc. Isn’t that kinda like the Wild traded him away for nothing? “Future considerations” always sounds shady to me.
If they don’t sign him by Aug 15 then he’s unrestricted free agent… so what happens, they just lose the rights and he goes back to Wild? I’m confused because it says Islanders control the decision but also it’s his contract clock. Also AHL Hamilton?? Is that even the right team or am I mixing it up with something else.
