Off Campus creator hints Season 2 shifts after exits

Off Campus creator Louisa Levy says Season 2 will feel different after Josh Heuston’s departure, with fewer live songs—though the show’s “needle drops” and music will remain central.
When Off Campus returns. it won’t just be a new chapter for Hannah and her world—it’ll be a new shape for the music that has defined the show. Creator Louisa Levy teased changes for Season 2 during Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest on Saturday. June 27. pointing first to the soundtrack moments fans expect.
“There’s going to be less live songs. Because we don’t have all of Hannah’s songwriting journey to play into,” Levy said. She also made clear that Josh Heuston’s exit is part of the reason.
“We don’t have Josh and After Hours this season so we don’t have those bands,” Levy continued. “But we still have a lot of music in other ways. We will still have some light music in the show.”
Levy closed by tying the creative adjustment back to what she sees as the show’s emotional engine. “I still think the heart of the show lives in those needle drops and those songs that underscore a moment — as well as the actual score.”
The series. based on the Off-Campus book series by Elle Kennedy. follows an elite ice hockey team and the women in their lives. as they “grapple with love. heartbreak. and self-discovery — forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood. ” according to the official synopsis.
Season 1 centered on the “sexy and fun ‘opposites attract’ romance between quiet songwriter. Hannah. and Briar University’s all-star hockey athlete. Garrett.” The show also introduced characters played by Ella Bright. Belmont Cameli. Mika Abdalla. Antonio Cipriano. Jalen Thomas Brooks and Stephen Kalyn.
Levy confirmed earlier this year that Justin wouldn’t appear in season 2. telling TV Guide. “Not next season. but I love Josh and I would not write him off if I can find a way to bring Justin back at some point.” She explained why. saying. “We never got a chance to meet Stella. who is the person he ends up with in the book. So maybe we’ll find a way to fold him into a future season.”.
She added that Justin’s absence wasn’t the original plan. “We don’t have him [available] next season, but never say never,” Levy said.
Heuston, 29, addressed the possibility of returning in an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly. “That’s above my pay grade but I just hope Justin finds love and continues to be happy while writing music. ” he said. He also sounded optimistic about where Justin could go next, hoping the character would keep moving forward.
“Justin is following his heart. He’s a little lover boy at heart,” Heuston said. “I think things went the way that they went but I think he’ll just continue to do that. He’ll probably go write some nice music about how heartbroken he is and then come back and try to find his love.”
In the same interview, Heuston pointed back to what Justin had been trying to hold onto. At the time, he said Justin was yearning “over someone else” after initially forming a connection with Hannah. The fictional couple didn’t work out, however, because Hannah’s romance with Garrett took center stage.
“I just tried to give Justin as much as possible. A lot of the time if you fell into a stereotype of another cool guy that does music on campus, you wouldn’t have that love or affinity for him,” he told Us Weekly. “My main thing was just trying to make him as good as possible.”
Off Campus is streaming on Prime Video.

So they’re just cutting the songs?? That’s literally the best part.
I swear every show says “less live songs” then it turns into awkward background music. Like needle drops are cool but live stuff hits different. Also Josh leaving… yeah that’s gonna mess up the whole vibe.
Wait, is Josh Heuston the hockey player or the songwriter? I got confused bc the bands thing. If he’s gone then what, they just don’t have any music from “After Hours”?? I don’t even know what that is honestly but I feel like they’re taking away the soundtrack on purpose.
Off Campus Season 2 sounds like it’s gonna be all “score” now and less of the fun parts. Like yeah needle drops still happen but fewer live songs means fewer chances for people to sing along?? Also they keep saying Hannah’s songwriting journey like that’s why it changes… but maybe the real reason is just budget or scheduling or whatever. Either way I’m not sure I like it yet.
