A massive steam engine set out across the Mississippi for America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, but Doritos is betting people will get there with crunch instead of steam.

The snack brand has launched a new “Build the Bold” contest that challenges Americans to recreate famous U.S. landmarks entirely out of Doritos chips for a chance to win $250,000. The campaign comes as the country gears up for its 250th birthday—also known as the semiquincentennial—and as brands and organizations across the U.S. roll out promotions tied to the milestone.

The “Build the Bold” contest lets participants build everything from the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument to Yellowstone National Park and the Brooklyn Bridge. Doritos’ approved options include the U.S. Capitol Building, Hoover Dam, Niagara Falls and the Lincoln Memorial.

Entrants aren’t just asked to build—they’re asked to explain. Contest submissions require a video that shows how the structure was created and why the builder chose that landmark. Doritos says entries are judged on creativity. accuracy and video presentation. and that its “Bold Factor”—which includes visual impact and creative use of chips—accounts for 50% of the final score.

The contest period runs through July 31, and participants can submit up to three unique builds during that window. The winner is expected to be notified around August 2026.

The rules are strict, down to what can and can’t appear on screen. Entries must only feature Doritos products and cannot include outside branding, other people, visible tattoos or copyrighted music. Doritos also says contestants cannot use generative artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT, to create their submissions.

Doritos is also layering in smaller incentives while the main contest plays out. Alongside the grand-prize challenge, the brand is running a separate sweepstakes with weekly giveaways throughout the summer. Daily entrants can win a “Bold at Home Bundle. ” featuring a Doritos-branded cooler. speaker. beach towel. and a $200 Mastercard gift card.

To enter either promotion, participants must be legal U.S. residents and 18 and older—or 19 and older in Alabama and Nebraska. No purchase is required.

PepsiCo, Doritos’ parent company, faces a key question as the contest moves toward judging: whether photos or videos of finalists and winning creations will be shared publicly after judging concludes. PepsiCo’s additional comment on that point has been sought.

The contest arrives with America’s 250th birthday already in motion, and it puts a simple idea at the center of the promotion: if you can build the country out of Doritos—and prove it on camera—you could be set for $250,000.
