DoorDasher joins Trump for impromptu White House press event after delivering McDonald’s

WASHINGTON — A DoorDash delivery turned into an impromptu White House moment Monday, complete with a quick press gag and a couple pointed questions from President Trump.

The president welcomed delivery driver Sharon Simmons to the White House and both spoke to reporters as she dropped off a food order from McDonald’s. Trump invited her to talk about tax breaks on tips, then, without much warning, steered the conversation into politics and culture—asking who she voted for and whether she thinks “men should play in women’s sports.”

Simmons told reporters she’d never delivered to the White House before. She said the “no tax on tips” policy has helped her financially while her husband is fighting cancer. According to Simmons, keeping more of her tips under the policy netted her $11,000 more than she would have earned otherwise. She agreed with the president that the tax benefit is “very special,” which is the kind of line that sounds rehearsed until it’s coming from someone holding a delivery order.

“It’s such an honor to meet you,” Trump told her. “And I think you voted for me, do you think?” Simmons answered with a laugh—“Um, maybe”—before the president said he’d heard she was a strong supporter and that they appreciate it. The exchange played out in front of the Oval Office area, where the usual hush you expect from a press scrum was mixed with that distinctly mundane smell of fast food lingering just long enough to remind everyone why they were there.

After reporters asked Trump about Iran, the pope, and an AI-generated image he’d posted that appeared to depict him as Jesus, a reporter turned the spotlight back to Simmons with a practical question: whether the White House tips well. She smiled and said, “Um… potentially.” Trump responded by handing her cash. “Yes, very,” Simmons added, and it landed with the odd confidence of a person who just wants the moment to stay simple.

At one point, Trump returned to his earlier cultural question, asking Simmons if she believes that “men should play in women’s sports” after criticizing Democratic policies. Simmons, clearly trying to keep herself out of a deeper fight, said, “I really don’t have an opinion on that.” Trump pushed back: “You don’t? I’ll bet you do.” Simmons replied, “No, no. I’m here about no tax on tips,” which, to be fair, was also what she’d been there to talk about in the first place. Or maybe not—because by then it felt like the delivery was mostly the excuse for a conversation that never really belonged to the driver to begin with.
