Doctor Who Christmas special canceled as Davies exits

For a lot of Doctor Who fans, Christmas isn’t just a holiday—it’s a promise. This year, that promise has been pulled.

The BBC has canceled the series’ special Christmas episode, a festive installment that was previously promised for 2026 as a “spectacular” special. In a Wednesday announcement, the broadcaster acknowledged the change would be “disappointing for fans.”

The reason sits in the middle of a bigger shift. Russell T Davies and producer Bad Wolf—who signed up for Doctor Who as part of a major reboot in 2021—are now leaving the iconic sci-fi series. With them gone. the BBC says it will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender. setting up a new production path for what comes next.

The planned Christmas special had been treated as something of an institution in the UK. Past favorites include David Tennant making his full debut as the Doctor in 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion,” a reminder of how tightly the show’s biggest moments have been linked to the holiday season.

In the statement. the BBC framed the decision as part of securing the next phase of Doctor Who for future generations. citing its obligations under the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements. The broadcaster said Doctor Who will be put out to competitive tender this year because BBC Studios owns the rights to the series and either it or an independent producer will have the opportunity to reinvent the show.

The BBC then addressed the Christmas episode directly. “After careful consideration. the BBC. Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode.” The statement added that the choice wasn’t made lightly. and that fans would feel the disappointment—but argued that it was the right move “rather than bridge the gap with a one off special.” Instead. it said the plan is to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show. so that when the TARDIS returns it does so “in all its glory.”.

At the same time, Davies posted a farewell on Instagram after his second spell as showrunner. He wrote to followers that he had not written a Christmas special script, and that “no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor.”

Those two pieces—BBC’s cancellation announcement and Davies’ personal note—leave fans facing the same stark question: what exactly was in motion behind the scenes before the episode was shelved, and how much of the holiday plan existed beyond the announcement the BBC made for 2026?

For now, the calendar looks different. With the festive special canceled and the creative leadership changing, Doctor Who’s next chapter will be determined through the competitive tender process the BBC says will begin this year—deciding who shapes the series after Davies and Bad Wolf step away.

  1. This is honestly kind of messed up because Christmas episodes are like the only time my whole family actually agrees to watch Doctor Who. Competitive tender sounds like a fancy way of saying “we’re gonna mess it up again.”

  2. Wait I thought Davies already left? Like didn’t he do that years ago, or is this like another reboot? If they’re putting it out to tender then who even owns what, because I swear Doctor Who rights are all over the place.

  3. BBC always says it’s for “future generations” but it’s probably just money/corporate stuff. Also the article says BBC Studios owns the rights so why would they tender it like it’s a normal TV show contract? Idk, I’m just mad the promised 2026 holiday thing got yanked like a switch.
