Dias rejects Ronaldo blame after Portugal’s DR Congo draw
Portugal defender Rúben Dias pushed back against criticism linking Cristiano Ronaldo to Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo, saying the team’s problem was a broader drop in attacking effectiveness after João Neves’ early goal. Dias said Portugal lacked urgency a
MIAMI GARDENS, FL — Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo was supposed to be a clean start. Instead, a sixth-minute header by João Neves was met by DR Congo’s equalizer before halftime, and by the final whistle the talk had turned quickly to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Rúben Dias stepped into that storm and rejected the idea that Ronaldo was responsible for Portugal’s disappointing result. The Portugal defender argued that the match shifted because the team became less effective in attack after taking an early lead, not because of any single player.
“I have complete confidence in my teammates, and I know we all have the ability to contribute to the team’s performance on the pitch,” Dias said through a translator.
Portugal grabbed the lead at the sixth minute. Neves’ header put the team ahead. and Dias framed the outcome as something far more connected to how Portugal played once the advantage was in hand. After scoring. Portugal struggled to create real chances. and DR Congo’s Yoane Wissa punished Portugal’s lack of cutting edge when he equalized before halftime.
“It was the first game of the competition. We scored a goal in a match we knew would be very difficult,” Dias said. “Perhaps that led to a tendency to overdo ball possession without being as effective as we try to be and usually are.”
Dias pointed directly to what he described as a missing ingredient: attacking urgency. In his account, Portugal failed to make DR Congo feel threatened and allowed the game to develop into a strange, uneven rhythm.
“I think we lost the chance to create danger, to make them feel the danger, to make them feel threatened,” Dias said. “Because of that, the game took on a strange atmosphere.”
For Portugal, the numbers underscored Dias’ complaint. The team managed just one shot on target across the contest — Neves’ sixth-minute goal effort — and did not test DR Congo goalkeeper Dimitry Bertaud again after taking the lead. Even as possession moved, Portugal never turned it into another clear chance.
The comments arrive as questions about Ronaldo have intensified. Dias addressed that pressure head-on, saying the team is used to the media attention that comes with the World Cup and that outside narratives shouldn’t throw off preparation.
“I think each one of us, including Cristiano, is used to dealing with media attention in contexts like the World Cup,” Dias said. “I believe that nothing new is happening to us.”
With the tournament already underway, Portugal now has to respond quickly at the next stage of the schedule. The team returns to action on June 23 against Uzbekistan.

Ronaldo totally gets blamed for everything lol.
I mean if Portugal scored early and then stopped attacking, that’s on somebody? Like even if it’s not Ronaldo, he’s the main guy people wanna see. Also one shot on target is wild.
Wait so they’re saying João Neves scored then after that it was “urgency” or whatever? Doesn’t sound like a Ronaldo thing but media always gonna bring his name up. Also MIAMI GARDENS is such a weird place to mention like who even cares where it happened
Portugal didn’t create danger, got punished, okay sure. But Ronaldo has like… the most pressure, so blaming the whole team feels like PR. If your captain doesn’t spark chances then yeah that’s on him, even if Dias is trying to cover it. One shot on target sounds like they barely showed up after the first goal.
