Malia Obama Drops “Obama” at Sundance—Then Speaks

Malia Ann Obama, 27, is building a filmmaking career as a writer and director—earning a Sundance debut in early 2024 with her short film “The Heart.” Her choice to be credited as “Malia Ann” sparked an internet firestorm, drawing strong comments from Whoopi Go

Malia Ann Obama didn’t just arrive on a Sundance red-carpet moment—she also made a decision that instantly traveled faster than any festival press cycle.

In early 2024. the 27-year-old daughter of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama debuted her short film at the Sundance Film Festival. And in the credits. she chose not to lean on “Obama.” Instead. she was credited as “Malia Ann” in her Sundance premiere. “The Heart”—a choice that ignited debate across social media and in parts of the industry.

That spotlight hasn’t slowed her momentum. Her filmmaking path has been taking shape for years, now drawing attention not only for where she’s going, but for how she’s getting there.

Her job, according to her IMDb profile, is writer and director. She’s a Harvard graduate. and her first notable screenwriting credit came in 2023 with Donald Glover’s series “Swarm.” She contributed to seven episodes. and showrunner Janine Nabers described the impact of Malia’s ideas and writing. Nabers said some of Malia’s creative pitches were “wild as hell. and they were just so good and so funny.” Nabers added. “She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”.

After that, she wrote her short film, “The Heart.” It premiered at Sundance in early 2024 in Park City, Utah.

In Sundance’s “Meet the Artist” introduction, Malia described what she was trying to capture in the film. She said it’s “about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret. ” while also emphasizing what the story hopes to uncover. She added. “I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in those things.” Her message to audiences was direct and intimate: “We hope you enjoy the film and it makes you feel a bit less lonely. or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are.”.

The controversy came from the simple line that appears in the title card. Malia is credited as “Malia Ann” in “The Heart” rather than as an Obama. Critics called her a “nepo baby,” and the discussion widened beyond her work into her name.

Whoopi Goldberg pushed back hard during an episode of her talk show “The View.” Goldberg asked. “If she knows she’s an Obama. why do you care?” and challenged the attention the argument was receiving. “Why do you care what she calls herself?. If she wanted to call herself Jeanette MacDonald, she has the right to!. If I can be Whoopi Goldberg. she can be whoever the hell she wants to be.” Goldberg continued. saying. “I mean why are people triggered by this kind of stuff?. Why are people wasting their time?. This is a grown woman. She is not thinking about her parents. … Leave this child alone. Leave her alone.”.

Barack and Michelle Obama have not publicly responded to the specific criticism about their daughter leaving her last name out of her filmmaker credit. But they have spoken about their children over the years.

In 2023. during a conversation on Michelle Obama’s “The Light Podcast. ” she addressed how her communication with her kids had changed. “I’m moving from mom-in-chief to advisor-in-chief,” she said. Michelle explained what she felt as her children grew: “That’s a lovely thing — to be able to watch my girls fly and have the relief that ‘OK. I think I didn’t mess them up.’”.

Taken together. the facts are hard to miss: Malia Ann Obama is credited as a writer and director. her work has reached high-profile spaces like Donald Glover’s “Swarm” and Sundance in Park City. Utah. and her choice to be credited as “Malia Ann” sparked public arguments that even reached “The View.” In the middle of that noise. her Sundance description focuses on themes of loneliness. forgiveness. tenderness. closeness. and regret—subjects that land less like a celebrity statement and more like creative intent.

For now, Malia’s career continues to move forward through the work itself, even as the name debate refuses to fade. And whether critics frame it as privilege or opportunity, her latest milestone—“The Heart” arriving in early 2024—kept the focus on filmmaking, not family branding.

  1. Why is everyone acting like her dropping “Obama” is some huge crime? Sundance credits are credits, lol. Half these people probably didn’t even click the article.

  2. I saw this on TikTok and they said she “changed her name” like she’s hiding from something. But then it’s like she’s still literally Malia Obama? So what’s the point then

  3. The part about “Malia Ann” is kinda crazy to me, like is she trying to be relatable or get away from the brand?? Also IMDb says writer/director but I feel like she’s getting help anyway bc of her last name being everywhere. Not saying she doesn’t have talent, I just don’t get the whole thing.

  4. Sundance people love drama more than movies. First she’s credited as Obama, then she isn’t, then suddenly it’s all about her “ideas” and she’s Harvard and did Swarm… like okay but did the short even win anything? Feels like press made it bigger than the film.
