The Swampscott native was in Massachusetts for the World Cup in June and July, making pizza stops in Attleboro, Boston, Brighton, Rehoboth, North Attleboro, Mansfield, and Worcester. His scores ranged from 6.8 to 8.2.
Portnoy, who founded Barstool Sports, also hosts the popular “One Bite” review series, in which he rates pizzas on a scale from 1 to 10 and typically visits spots recommended by followers. Before diving in, he always says, “one bite, everybody knows the rules,” but typically takes several bites before settling on a score.
Pizza Project in Brighton received the highest score, an 8.2, during Portnoy’s visit on July 23.
After eating almost the entire slice, Portnoy determined the “artisan” cheese pie is a “great, great, great pizza” with a “great undercarriage,” or bottom crust, he said in the YouTube review.

Ranking third highest, Rehoboth Baking Co. in Rehoboth received a 7.7 rating.
In the video, Portnoy said he “loved how it’s dry” as he isn’t a fan of greasy pizza. But there was something about the pizza he couldn’t quite put his finger on. He later realized that it was a bakery-style pizza.
Rehoboth Baking Co., which opened in 2022, makes its pizza dough with a sourdough base that goes through a 72-hour cold fermentation process, said owner Paul Booras.
After Portnoy’s visit on July 8, the store saw a 20% increase in business and expects the increase to last another month or so, Booras said. “This time of year is a [slower] time of year for us anyways,” he said.
Despite receiving the lowest rating of Portnoy’s Massachusetts visits this summer, a 6.8, Briggs Corner Grill in Attleboro saw a boost in business for two to three weeks after the “One Bite” review, Manager Thanos Katsinas said. The restaurant first opened in 1981.
After forgetting what city he was in, Portnoy said the pizza joints in the region near Gillette Stadium are “gigantic,” adding that locals “like pizza that you need 19 napkins to wipe down before you take a bite.”
“It’s light” Greek-style pizza, but “not my style necessarily,” said Portnoy, who prefers bar pizza.
On Sunday, Portnoy posted on Facebook, “What are the best Boston area pizza places I haven’t tried yet?” suggesting more Massachusetts reviews could be on the way.
Here are his nine Massachusetts scores so far, ranked from lowest to highest.
