Darron Lee indicted June 9 after evidence charge dropped

Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee was indicted on a first-degree murder charge after prosecutors dropped a tampering-with-evidence count. He remains jailed without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
The day a grand jury returned an indictment, the case moved onto a single, unforgiving track for Darron Lee: first-degree murder.
Lee. a former NFL linebacker who played for the Jets. Bills and Chiefs and starred at Ohio State. was indicted on June 9 in Hamilton County. Tennessee. in the death of his girlfriend. Prosecutors later dismissed a tampering with evidence charge. and Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp said the office would focus “solely on the murder.”.
Wamp explained the shift on WTVC: “The State dismissed the tampering with evidence charge.” Her message was blunt about what comes next. “We will focus solely on the murder.”
Lee remains in the Hamilton County Jail without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 17.
The indictment centers on the death of Lee’s partner, who was found dead in a rented home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, east of Chattanooga. First responders “attempted life-saving measures” on the female victim when they arrived, but were unsuccessful.
Investigators identified Lee as a suspect and took him into custody. He was denied bond after detective Brian Lockhart testified in February that Lee was in the rented home when the Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and that his girlfriend likely fell in the shower due to her narcolepsy.
But the medical and investigative details presented to the court pointed elsewhere. Lockhart testified an autopsy found severe injuries. including “severe brain trauma. a broken neck. bruising across her body. a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh. stab wounds to her legs. and significant facial trauma.” Investigators also said the evidence did not match Lee’s account.
At the center of the earlier tampering allegation were cleaning supplies found in the Ooltewah residence. including bleach wipes and a spray bottle. That evidence was part of why prosecutors brought the tampering-with-evidence charge in the first place—before dismissing it later as the case narrowed.
During a preliminary hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that included body camera footage, testimony from investigators, and evidence recovered from electronic devices.
The case also took in an unusual detail: prosecutors say Lee asked ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot, for medical advice without calling the police. ESPN reported that included questions about whether a fall could cause bruising around the eyes and “two stabby looking wounds.”
Now, prosecutors are pursuing a first-degree murder conviction. If convicted, Lee could receive a life sentence. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty is expected in the coming weeks.
For readers watching from the outside, the timeline matters as much as the charges. A grand jury returned the indictment on June 9 after the tampering count was dismissed. Lee is still awaiting what comes next. held without bond. with his June 17 court date as the next checkpoint in a case that prosecutors say will be argued as murder—no detour. no compromise.

How do they drop one charge but still say it’s murder… seems backwards.
So he was in the shower when she fell? That whole narcolepsy thing is wild. Also “no bond” right away like dang. I don’t even get how they’re sure if they dropped the tampering.
People keep saying “tampering dropped” like that means he’s innocent but it doesn’t right? Maybe it’s just the prosecutors couldn’t prove the other part. I hate this because the injuries listed are insane, like brain trauma and stab wounds… just breaks your heart.
First-degree murder but they dismissed tampering… so what, they already had enough without the evidence stuff? I saw on TikTok that NFL guys always get off easier, so idk why he’s still jailed. But then again she was found in Ooltewah and I’m guessing it’s one of those “close to Chattanooga” cover-up deals? Also the bit about being in the home when deputies arrived—could’ve meant he just lived there? The article cuts off so I’m confused.
