Dana White frets about gnats at White House UFC

Dana White didn’t sound worried about fists.
When UFC head honcho Dana White talked about the upcoming “Freedom 250” UFC event on the White House grounds. the concern that stuck wasn’t the octagon cage or the fighters stepping into it. He said what truly bothered him came from a more ordinary place: the swarm of flying insects at the White House itself.
Construction for the temporary UFC arena is underway on the White House South Lawn, with 5,000 invited guests scheduled to attend. The fight is set for June 14, the same date as President Donald Trump’s birthday.
White said the insects were on his mind after a recent visit to the Rose Garden with Trump, where White described being invited to dinner and reacting to what he called an overwhelming number of gnats in the air.
“He invited me to dinner there. The amount of gnats that are flying around, I’m like, ‘Holy (expletive).’ As soon as I got on the plane, I got on the phone with my head of production and said, ‘Yeah, let me tell you about the gnat situation tonight.’”
White made clear he wasn’t focused on whether fighters are tough enough to collide in an MMA cage. The worry, he said, is the environment—bugs showing up where people aren’t expecting them.
That anxiety is now feeding into how the event is being planned. White said he discussed potential countermeasures with his production head, including whether fans might help by changing air movement and making it harder for gnats to hang around.
“Maybe we put fans in, because gnats have a hard time in the wind.”
He also said he doesn’t like fighting outside, pointing to the kinds of details that come with outdoor conditions.
“That’s why I don’t like fighting outside. Ever.”
The insect problem isn’t only White’s concern. UFC commentator and longtime MMA personality Joe Rogan weighed in on his show, characterizing bugs—specifically gnats—as a central issue. He said fighters and organizers would need to explain what they plan to do about them.
“The bugs are a big one. Gnats. What are you going to do about that?. How are they going to f—–g do anything about the bugs. because I know that Dana was talking about that recently. they were talking about maybe using fans. Is that enough?. Got bug strips everywhere?. What are you going to stop the bugs, there’s a lot of bugs.”.
Rogan also questioned the overall choice of time and location, pointing to what he called extreme heat in Washington, D.C. for a June date, saying the conditions the event would face can be brutal.
The White House arena itself is already taking shape in a way that may heighten the stakes of the insect challenge. Organizers have built what White described as massive intersecting arches—known as “The Claw”—that will hold lighting and television screens.
Under those arches will be the octagon ring where fighters will compete.
White said he was thinking about lighting and power—along with what insects might be drawn to as a result.
“When you’re a fighter, think about that lighting grid, The Claw, that we’re going to have (and) the amount of power in the lights,” White said. “Moths, gnats, and God knows what else, fighters trying to deal with that.”
Ariel Helwani, a Canadian-American sports journalist, also addressed the bug worry on his podcast, asking a blunt question about how any countermeasures would work.
“How the hell are they going to combat this?”
Rogan echoed that skepticism, saying the idea of fighting outside doesn’t appeal to him and that June in Washington, D.C., is typically very hot.
Even outside the event itself. White’s comments have been framed by others as part of a longer-running UFC conversation about bugs and outdoor fighting. Time magazine previously ran a piece on White and the UFC that included this line: “Strange as it may sound. White talks about insects several times in our conversations.”.
The same report said the UFC has had only one outdoor fight in its history, in Abu Dhabi in 2010, and that it was humid and “apparently buggy.” White was quoted in that context saying: “Imagine fighting and you got bugs flying in your mouth or in your nose.”
For White and UFC leadership, the immediate question is whether practical steps—like fans—can realistically solve a problem that shows up in summer air, right where fighters will be.
For fans watching from the ground, the anxiety sounds oddly mismatched with the brand: a sport built around absorbing damage, yet apparently stuck on what can crawl or fly.
There’s also a hard-edged, human concern in the way the planning is being discussed: if the environment turns chaotic, fighters could be forced to deal with insects while trying to focus on opponents.
And there are bigger stakes than just discomfort. If the whole event becomes defined by bugs rather than fights, the spectacle on the White House grounds could end up feeling less controlled than the setting is meant to suggest.
Dana White’s comments, and the reaction from figures like Joe Rogan and Ariel Helwani, put that tension front and center—right down to the practical question of how organizers will keep insects away when the lights come on and the outdoor summer season is in full swing.
For the sake of the fighters, the hope embedded in the public debate is simple: that insect-repellent rules won’t shut down a basic line of defense, and that the gnats won’t be the ones who take advantage of the chaos.

Gnats at the White House?? lol okay.
Dana White is worried about bugs more than the fights? Seems backwards. Also “Freedom 250” sounds fake, like marketing for something else.
Wait so they’re building an arena on the South Lawn for UFC but the big issue is insects? I saw somewhere they said it was on Trump’s birthday so I thought it was gonna be more of a show deal, not like “keep the gnats away” vibes. Next thing you know they’ll be asking people to clap to scare them off or something.
This is so weird because Rose Garden dinner invites and gnats… like are they even taking security seriously? If it’s June 14 and it’s Trump’s birthday maybe they’ll cancel it for “weather” or bugs or whatever. I mean fighters can get punched but a little gnat swarm is where Dana loses it? Sure.
