Cruise Captain Arrested After Passenger Falls Overboard in Corfu

Greek authorities arrested a 56-year-old Italian cruise captain after a New Zealand passenger fell into the sea when strong winds broke the ship’s moorings at the port of Corfu.
When the cables failed in the strong winds off Corfu, a passenger didn’t just slip from sight—she fell into the water as the ship broke free from its moorings.
Greek authorities arrested the cruise captain after the incident at the port of Corfu, on the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea. The arrest took place on the evening of June 30, according to a July 1 news release from the Greek coast guard. The captain is a 56-year-old Italian citizen.
Greek officials did not release the captain’s name, did not specify when during the boarding process the fall happened, and did not identify which ship he was working on.
Authorities said the crash of forces came first. “Due to the strong winds prevailing in the area, the cables holding the (cruise ship) broke, resulting in the passenger boarding ladder moving away from the pier and a female passenger falling into the sea,” the translated release said.
The guest who fell was 56 years old and a citizen of New Zealand. Cruise ship crew and port workers rescued her from the water. She was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries to her face and body, the release said. An investigation is ongoing.
In the moments after the rescue. what stood out was how quickly a windy harbor can turn routine movement—like getting on or off a ship—into an accident with consequences. The release describes the immediate mechanics of how the mooring cables failed and how the boarding ladder shifted away from the pier. leaving a passenger with little room to avoid the fall.
Greek maritime authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
